NEWS IN BRIEF
PUBLIC NATURAL SWIMMING POND TO OPEN IN LONDON Work has begun on the UK’s first ever public natural swimming pond. Designed and built by Kingcombe Aquacare Ltd and one of Europe’s leading natural pool designers BIOTOP, the chemical-free pool is part of an art project in the King’s Cross Development in London. Work on the 411m² pool is due to be completed by the end of the year, when the pond will then be given time to develop naturally, before its scheduled opening to the public as an arts and events space in spring 2015. Like all natural swimming pools, the King’s Cross pond is likely to attract not just people, but also large varieties of insects and wildlife which will create habitats within the planted edges around the pond.
John Colton, Managing Director of Kingcombe Aquacare Ltd, said: “Our experienced team has built all sizes of pools, lakes and water features in a variety of locations, including roof gardens.
“However, this will be our first public natural swimming pond, so we are enjoying the challenge this project provides.”
CRYPTO CLOSES SCOTTISH POOL TWICE IN A MONTH Arbroath Swimming Pool was recently closed for a second time in less than a month after cryptosporidium was once again found in the water. The pool was first closed at the end of October after a handful of people presented with symptoms of cryptosporidium and Angus Council has been criticised for taking five days to close the pool on the second occasion following a report that a swimmer had become unwell just a day after the pool reopened.

Lucky Steve and Michelle Hammond of A Bigger Splash in Richmond, North Yorkshire were this month handed the keys of a brand new Mercedes A Class car by Certikin’s Mark Rowlands and EMEC’s Simon Jay. Their winning ticket was drawn out of a hat at the recently held LIW Exhibition after they had entered the Certikin dosing competition launched earlier this year.
Mark Rowlands, CertiChem Sales Manager says: “Congratulations to Steve and Michelle, we wish them many hours of happy motoring and thank you to everyone who took part in the competition. It proved to be the best competition that Certikin has ever run!”
A Bigger Splash’s showroom is situated in Brompton-On-Swale, just outside Richmond, and serves North Yorkshire and County Durham. It is well stocked with branded chemicals, accessories and spares for the hot tub and swimming pool customer. They have been supplying and servicing swimming pools and spas since 2004 and Steve and Michelle have been involved in the wet leisure industry for over 25 years. Steve has a wealth of experience to offer both the commercial and domestic customer, covering, new installations, refurbishment, maintenance and servicing. Steve says: “We are over the moon to win this car and could
not believe our luck when we received the phone call! We have been using Certikin since starting the business some ten years ago. I first came across Certikin dosing systems while carrying out a service on a commercial spa. I found the system easy to service and re-calibrate, and in conversation with the customer found that they were also pleased with the trouble-free operation. Since then, whenever A Bigger Splash is asked to recommend a dosing system, there is no hesitation in recommending Certikin.”

New Super-Condensing Water Heater For Leisure Centre
Atlantic Boilers of Ashton-under- Lyne have recently completed another successful super- condensing water heater installation at Whitworth Leisure Centre in Rochdale. This busy community centre has two swimming pools and a fully equipped fitness suite requiring constant shower demand for hot water.
For several years, the hot water requirement had been
met by two cylinders and 18kW input by four electric immersion heaters. A boost in visitors and rising energy prices, the Centre Administrators resolved to install an Atlantic E-Condense 450l/55kW water heater with serpentine flue, producing 920 litres per hour of water at 60°C with a consistent super efficiency of 97%GCV (107%NCV). With increasing experience in
the leisure sector Atlantic are able to provide a range of models suitable for this environment including electric water heaters, condensing water heaters and extremely compact and low cost plate heat exchangers, which avoid most scale build up.
