POOL & SPA INDUSTRY RA Year To Be

In this, the final edition of the year, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes reflects on what has been a busy year for many and looks at what is in store for the start of 2015

Associations that comprise EUSA. My congratulations to all of the award recipients of the second European Pool and Spa Awards, details of which are to be found on page 38. Congratulations are especially extended to the UK recipients for their award success.

ow was 2014 for you? Speaking to many members, it has been a hugely successful year for them and this is a very encouraging

barometer for BISHTA and SPATA. For other members, it has been a bit tougher and this is obviously a bit more concerning and the trade associations continue to explore ways of promoting the whole industry so that everyone can benefit.

The past year has seen a number of notable achievements and it has sadly also been a time to say goodbye to some of our friends in the industry. Having recently attended Tony Line’s funeral, it was humbling to see the reaction of his industry colleagues, as well as his other friends and family. Tony was a true friend of SPATA and someone who was not afraid to voice an opinion to help shape the industry to be more ‘fit for purpose’. Tony was a greatly respected member of SPATA’s Technical Committee, helping to shape the 2010 Standards and a number of Member factsheets. There is further information on Tony’s life on page 20.

In terms of other things to report in this issue, we have continued the progress of the European standards for domestic swimming pools. Although there have been some delays, the construction / installation standards (EN 16582) should be ready for signing off in early 2015 and then they should be available to purchase by autumn 2015. The pool water filtration, circulation and treatment standards (EN 16713) are anticipated to be finished by February 2015, so they might be available to purchase towards the end of 2015 / possibly early 2016. A new Working Group (WG3) has started on Domestic Mini Pools and BISHTA has been instrumental in getting agreement to start a WG4 on Domestic Spas and Hot Tubs. This work begins this month and then will hopefully set standards that can be harmonised with North America. In Europe, the BSPF continues to represent the UK with the 12 other National

Apart from setting standards, promoting the industry and lobbying on its behalf, networking opportunities remain an important part of the year. SPATEX is an obvious focal point and Michele, Helen and Penny have done a fabulous job to get the messages out to the widest possible audience. SPATEX 2015 is looking very exciting and don’t forget to book your tickets for the Industry Gala Dinner, it is open to everyone (whether or not you are BISHTA / SPATA members) and the ticket price is £69.95 + VAT per person. There are many awards being made available from BISHTA, SPATA and the ISPE will also be recognising their previously presented awards. There is more news on SPATEX on page 37. Other networking opportunities are made possible through the SPATA regional meetings and the latest gatherings were recently held at a number of venues around the country. I am very grateful to Ardex, Cannings, David Hallam, Ocea, SCP and the ASA for use of their respective venues. At these regional meetings, I have been struck by the commitment of a number of our members who regularly attend these events and am very grateful for the dedication of the Regional Chairs for their respective contributions to galvanise interest in their area. John Scott, Brad Cannings, Stephen Booth, Claire Asher, Ben Studdy and Jamie Smith. Networking and training are also entwined with the AGM’s and this year the event was combined with Issy Rickards-Sanger’s President’s Weekend in September. More details of these events can be found on page 36.

The volume of PR work that we have been able to deal with this year is due to the help and support of PIP’s Committee and the dedication of Sallie Golding as PR and Marketing Manager. Sallie has been able to achieve a great deal with revamping the BISHTA and SPATA websites and contributions to a number of magazines (both trade and consumer).

Sallie has been helped on the PR front by emembered

Jan Hardy and Jan has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of the office and the service that is provided to members. Jan has been ably supported by Alison Jones (who left the BSPF this summer) and now by Ali Garratt. Karen Goddard ensures that the accounts are kept up to date. Thanks are also due to Harry Crockford for his work and he has now left to pursue work in the Territorial Reserve.

The end of the year is always a good time to express my gratitude to the many people that directly assist the BSPF office, starting with Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and the SPATEX Directors. Each of the relevant companies benefit from having dedicated Chairs for the respective Boards, Committees and Councils. They are committed to ensuring the industry continues to meet the challenges and demands placed upon it. I am very grateful to Issy Rickards- Sanger (BSPF) Richard Carrington (SPATA), Alex Kemsley (BISHTA); Jamie Adams (PIP) and Howard Gosling (SPATEX) for leading these companies and also the many dedicated Committee members. Special mention needs to be made of Patrick Thorpe for his long standing commitment to the BSPF family of companies, as Company Secretary for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. The Technical teams have worked tirelessly this year under the leadership of Peter Lang and Howard Gosling and SPATA is also very fortunate to have three inspectors (Peter Lang, Jim Gordon and Tim Bareham) to advise members on standards. With best wishes for this festive period and I look forward to seeing you at SPATEX 2015.
