‘Focus should be footfall’ » Glasgow Chamber responds to the city centre transport strategy
Glasgow’s City Centre Transport Strategy should clearly focus on increasing the number of people visiting the area. Glasgow Chamber’s response
to the City Council’s consultation on the Transport Strategy said that increasing footfall is a clear means to delivering the aims of increased jobs, growth and prosperity in the city centre.
The submission also said the
strategy should take more account of city centre car users. Glasgow Chamber feels that “the current strategy focuses on bus travel, cycling and pedestrian use on the assumption that no additional measures need to be taken to address the concerns of private vehicle users.” It also said that “the role of
both private cars and commercial vehicles in supporting business in the city centre is understated” in the proposed strategy. It pointed out that a Chamber
survey had shown car parking as the major reason given for responders not to shop in the city centre. It said: “We believe that
retaining Glasgow’s status as the
second most significant retail centre in the UK is important to tourism and to inward investment and so we believe that attention should be paid to the existing and
emerging preferences in shopper behaviour. “We are also keen to encourage
the growth of the night-time economy where Glasgow City

” The role of both private cars and commercial vehicles in supporting business in the city centre is understated”
Centre has an offer of considerable range and depth.” In particular Glasgow Chamber
said that while it supports the intention to support largely car-free avenues, “individual businesses do need to be supplied with goods and services and we would seek assurances that the costs for businesses, such as beer and food suppliers, will not increase due to increased parking fines.” It said that access needs of
commercial vehicles needed to be “actively considered and accommodated”.
