MTV Europe awards is music to Glasgow’s ears

he MTV Europe Music Awards rolled into Glasgow and showcased the city to more than


half a billion homes around the world. Te eagerly awaited MTV


EMAs brought a galaxy of stars to Te SSE Hydro and injected about £10 million into the local economy, providing a boost to many Glasgow Chamber members. Tose enjoying the benefit of


increased business included hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and other businesses. Tose performing at the


ceremony included Scotland’s own star DJ Calvin Harris, Ed Sheeran, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande. Te atraction of the MTV


awards to Glasgow was another success for the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and followed the broadcasting company bringing MTV Crashes to the city’s Old Fruitmarket in 2010. Anne Ledgerwood, General


Manager of the St. Enoch Centre and Chair of the City Centre Retail Association, said: “Hosting the MTV EMAs is an incredible opportunity for Glasgow. It has the potential to generate millions of pounds for the Scotish economy


Transport Glasgow Airport has a new owner under wider £1 billion deal


Glasgow Airport has been sold by Heathrow Airport Holdings (HAH) to new owners as part of a £1 billion deal along with Aberdeen and Southampton Airports. The city airport, an active


Glasgow Chamber member, will now be owned by a consortium formed by Ferrovial, the Spanish construction company and Macquarie of Australia.


Under the deal, expected


to go through in January, the airport will continue to be managed locally. Ferrovial already part owns


Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport and holds a 25 per cent stake in HAH, which was previously BAA. Stuart Patrick, Chief


Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “The existing


management team has done an excellent job in promoting the airport’s assets and attracting in new flights over what have been rough times. “There is still huge


potential for growth and route development, and that has obviously influenced the attractiveness of Glasgow as an investment.”


Among the stars at the awards were host Nicki Minaj, Bibi Zhou (top right) and Enrique Iglesias (bottom right)


and promote the city to an international TV audience of more than half a billion. “Not only will it significantly


boost our visitor appeal among music fans and show the world just how vibrant and exciting Glasgow has become, it’s also good news for our retailers. Hosting the Commonwealth Games showed that major events can help drive the city’s retail success.”


Ryan James, Chair of the


Glasgow Restaurant Association, said: “It’s fantastic that Glasgow can atract such a high-profile event as the MTV EMAs. On the back of the success of the Commonwealth Games, the city’s global profile has never been greater. Glasgow’s appeal is now year-round; unlike many cities, we’re no longer a seasonal destination with periods of down time.”
