A two-day conference explores how Glasgow can become the city o G
lasgow’s city centre should aim to become an internationally recognised leader in using new digital
technology and other innovations to continually develop as an urban centre. Tat was one of the ambitions for
Glasgow set out at a two-day event in October hosted jointly by Glasgow Chamber and the Urban Land Institute on ‘Tink Digital Scotland: Tomorrow’s City Centre’. Alison McRae, Projects Director of
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted to be working on this Tomorrow’s City Centre Project with the world-renowned Greg Clark and the Urban Land Institute. “Te conference, and retreat the day
before, looked at how constantly evolving technologies will influence consumer behaviour and potentially
impact the city centre experience in the next five years. “It will build on work already being
done through Glasgow’s City Centre Strategy and the Future City Demonstrator, as well as exploiting links and intelligence through private sector partners who know city centres well. “We brought together many players
and stakeholders to answer questions such as: »How do city centres remain relevant with the growth of online shopping and out-of-town retail and leisure centres? »What are the emerging digital technology developments that will impact positively or negatively on the city centre experience? »How are these digital developments going to directly impact on consumer behaviour and expectations and what
might this mean for the city of tomorrow? “Tis project is about working in
partnership to ensure that our city centre and the businesses within it are fit for purpose to take advantage of these digital changes. “Te content of the discussions has
then been fed to experts and reviewed, which will culminate in a white paper, the findings of which will be rolled out to other cities worldwide with Glasgow as a case study – puting the city at the forefront of issues that will affect population centres across the planet.” Te event produced a number of key conclusions that Glasgow should
