GLASGOW BUSINESS DECEMBER 2014

On a journey to the city of tomorrow

Glasgow Chamber recently held a major event looking at the future of the city centre and its contribution to the economy. In a two-day event we sought to dig deep into

the trends in technology that are shaping the future of the hearts of our cities. We sought to answer how digital technology is going to shape our behaviour as shoppers and as those seeking entertainment, and how it will shape the way we work, and where we work. The future of the city

centre is something we have particularly focused on as a Chamber since we held our first conference in 2011 related specifically to the economy of this key part of our city. We have created a City Centre Strategy Board in

Glasgow, chaired by the Leader of the City Council; we have been successful in attracting the Future Cities Demonstrator project; and, as a Chamber,

we have created the City Centre Retail Association and the Sauchiehall Street Business Improvement District. These initiatives, plus the City Council’s signing of a £1.13 billion City Deal will contribute to the development of the Glasgow city centre of the future. The Tomorrow’s City Centre event

drew together leading thinkers from the Urban Land Institute, the London-based Future Cities Catapult, the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde’s Future Cities Demonstrator Project, along with those from the private sector. Private sector speakers included those

from IBM, BT and John Lewis. About 100 business people attended the event from the

city’s retail, restaurant, property and leisure sectors. Findings and continuing questions will soon be published in a White Paper, but some of the issues raised are worth highlighting and reflecting on here.

Conference calls for short leases to boost city centre retail business 6

The clearest issue is the impact of e-commerce on shopping in the city centre – what will this trend mean for the future demand for retail space in Glasgow city centre? Among the most striking contributions to the event were those from delegates suggesting that there will be a much wider range of goods and services on offer in the Glasgow city centre of the future. The conclusion is that, contrary to what many

expected, while our use of the internet is growing, it is not always at the expense of the physical shop. We are likely to see more retail outlets where the shop becomes part source of entertainment, part advice centre and part product demonstrator. Could some of the units that are being freed up

by shops be used for new businesses that make goods in the back shop and sell them in the front? Another major question is whether Glasgow

can learn from other cities and bring back more living accommodation into the city centre. Glasgow currently has a quarter of the number of people living in the city centre as there are in Manchester. Discussing the night-time economy, we talked

about whether many parts of the city centre are too dominated by younger visitors at the expense of other groups. As we try to make sense of all these changing

trends and challenges for the future of our city centre, it’s helpful that the City Centre Strategy Board and the City Centre Retail Association makes an array of talent available to us to respond. We shall meet these challenges and the

business community here will continue to be at the leading edge of developing tomorrow’s city centre.
