❧ COOKING COMPANION GROW YOUR OWN BASIL
Basil leaves, green or purple, are delicious when chopped into salads or sauces and are easy to grow on a warm window sill.
Sow the seeds thinly into a pot of seed compost, stand the pot in water for 10 minutes, drain and place on a saucer.
❧
When about 5-10cm tall, water the pot, tip out the seedlings and split the clump into several smaller ones, potting each clump into a larger pot.
Water and feed with tomato food and when the plants are 15-30cm tall, you can carefully pick off some leaves to use – the smell and taste is delicious. Sow fresh seeds every 3-4 weeks to make sure you have plenty all summer.
