Polytunnels are our saving grace

JANE MELLOWSHIP OF CAMEL COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE EXPLAINS…

As the hungry gap looms upon us again, our saving grace is Camel CSA’s three polytunnels. Late winter sowings of carrots, beetroot, spring onions, broad beans, peas and parsley are coming on nicely.

This month we’re doing lots more sowing in the tunnels in anticipation of the season ahead. Fast-growing crops like lettuce, rocket, turnips, kohlrabi and radish are so valuable at this time, as well as the overwintered leaf beet. We have various other ways of fi lling our

weekly vegetable boxes during the leaner months. We like to add a jar of our own homemade chutney made from the tomato glut of the previous year or a bag of sprouted mung beans, which are delicious and nutritious. These give our loyal box members a little more to tickle their taste buds after months of mainly roots and brassicas. As the professional grower who decides what’s

in the boxes each week I like to ensure that at least a couple of items come from Camel CSA’s own site at this time of year even when our beds are waterlogged or at their emptiest. We always manage it! But this is also a time when we can really

support other local veg growers in north Cornwall and buy in from them. They supply an extended range of seasonal vegetables to make sure the boxes have all-year-round variety.

Outside, the sodden soil has taken a long time to dry out after the unprecedented winter storms in Cornwall and across the south-west. Outdoor planting has been severely delayed and disrupted our plans to grow some very early potatoes. But the garlic – including the elephant garlic – we planted before the end of the year is still growing strongly in one of the best-drained corners of our two-acre plot. www.camel-csa.org.uk
