❧ GARDEN GROW? How does your GROW A MEDITERRANEAN FEAST WITH YOUR OWN AUBERGINES AND BASIL!
AWESOME AUBERGINES These delicious vegetables are surprisingly easy to grow.
1 Sow seeds thinly in a pot of seed compost, stand the pot in water for 10 minutes, drain and place on a saucer on a warm window sill.
2 When the seedlings are 5cm high, water, carefully tip them out and separate the individual seedlings, potting each one in a 9cm diameter pot.
3 When these are fi lled with roots, plant each one into a 20-25cm pot. Keep them warm and watered, either in a greenhouse, or outside when all frosts have gone and with the pot in full sun against a warm wall.
4 For the fi rst fortnight outside, cover the plants with polythene or fl eece against the cool nights. Stake each plant as they grow and when 30cm tall, snip 2-3cm off the top of the main stem to make them bush out.
5 Water and feed fortnightly with tomato feed until the fruits start to show. When 5 or 6 fruits have set, cut off all other fl owers, to allow the fruits to grow – they can be harvested in August when the skins are shiny.
