n order to soothe the skin and to make it more resistant to external aggressions, it is necessary to protect against the hyperreactivity and excessive inflammatory reactions of the epidermis. Quince leaves have interesting anti- inflammatories abilities that can be helpful to improve skin comfort.
What is a sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin is a widespread problem due to lifestyle factors such as pollution, stress, important daily-use substances etc. Approximately 40% of the population complains of itching, burning, stinging and discomfort sensations when it comes to their skin1
.
Sensitive skin is a healthy skin characterized by a hyperreactivity to external aggressions such as temperature changes, UV rays, wind etc, meaning it reacts faster and more intensely. The threshold of tolerance is lower and can lead to skin inflammation and in some cases, to an irritation. Under aggressions, the
normal and spontaneous reaction of the skin is to defend itself. Some of its cells secrete inflammation mediators that will trigger an inflammatory reaction. This reaction is a protective response that contributes to the natural defence process of the skin. However, in case of sensitive skin, when the skin is subjected to a high level of daily stress, the inflammatory response becomes too aggressive and provides discomfort. The sensitive skin phenomenon affects all skin categories and phototypes. Although more frequent among women, men can also suffer from sensitive skin. Other skin conditions, like compromised and irritated skins, can present hyperreactivity to aggressions and can lead to problems regulating the natural inflammatory process.
Quince leaf extract rich in polyphenols Quince, Cydonia oblongaMill., is a deciduous and perennial tree from the Rosaceae family native to Western Asia. It can grow between 4 and 8 metres high and has gnarled branches. Quince is primarily grown for its fruits which are consumed in many parts of the world. During the last decades, extensive research has been performed on their chemical composition and biological properties. They are attracting interest due to their health promoting properties with potential application in nutritional and pharmaceutical fields. By comparison, quince leaves have up until now been less studied. However, they are a promising natural source of bioactive phytochemicals, such as phenolic compounds2
.
Moreover, plant polyphenols are known to have anti-inflammatory abilities3
. These properties
could be introduced to help fight against the recent sensitive skin phenomenon. In order to evaluate anti-inflammatory properties of quince leaves and cosmetics applications, Berkem has developed a new plant extract. The environmental friendly extraction process implies green and reusable solvents. It concentrates bioactive compounds to obtain an active with high polyphenol content, in particular from the glycosylated flavonoids family. The quince leaf extract obtained is a preservative and carrier-free powder. This active ingredient, 100% plant-origin, soothes the skin, reduces the inflammatory
