Beiersdorf Innovation Pitch Award

Promoted by:

in-cosmetics 2014 has partnered with skin care giant Beiersdorf to identify the most forward- thinking ideas and concepts in a unique contest – the Beiersdorf Innovation Pitch.

All the exhibitors were invited to submit their most innovative ideas – whether they be a single ingredient, appealing concept, novel technology or innovative formulation in line with Beiersdorf’s vision to become the number one in its relevant categories and markets. The 3 best ideas will be selected by Beiersdorf and announced at the event's Awards Ceremony (Wed, 2 April - 18:00-20:00)

We have interviewed Andreas Clausen (AC), Manager Scouting and Technology Support at Beiersdorf, to hear more about this new initiative.

Why have you chosen in-cosmetics as the platform for an ‘ideas contest’?

AC: As in-cosmetics is the leading exhibition for the personal care ingredients industry, we see the show as the perfect venue for capturing innovative ideas from all over the world. The show is located in Hamburg, where

Beiersdorf has its roots. This is a unique opportunity to bring innovative raw material producers in direct contact with our key R&D and Marketing Managers and provide exclusive insights into how we work. With this ‘idea contest’, we are sure to find new collaboration partners for the future.

What types of projects will get the attention of your R&D teams?

AC: Our strategic focus lies within our core categories of body, face, deodorant, shower, sun and men care. Ideas which account for skin care innovations in these fields are therefore of particular

interest for us. However, we are also looking forward to receiving all other kinds of submissions and would like to encourage the participants not to limit their ideas.

What would the holy grail of innovation be for Beiersdorf? AC: We are facing the same challenges as all other players in the cosmetics industry, when it comes for example to overcoming technological hurdles. Many in our industry have been working on the same holy grails, sometimes for decades. So, let us be realistic: with our ‘idea contest’, we hope to get fresh and surprising ideas with a clear perceivable benefit for the consumer. In the event that we might find a gem with an innovative idea, we would be more than happy to follow that path together with our partner.

How will the winners benefit from taking part in this project? AC: First of all, we would like to invite all companies, whether they are among the winners or not, to become a member of our Pearlfinder community. This will enable these companies to stay in continuous dialogue with Beiersdorf and access our scientific needs in the future. Winning ideas in our contest will be evaluated in detail by Beiersdorf, with the aim to start a joint collaboration. The winners will officially be announced at the in-cosmetics Awards Ceremony and receive one of our three awards. Additionally, they receive a “Beiersdorf Backstage Pass” which includes the opportunity to participate in an exclusive guided tour on 3 April 2014 at the Beiersdorf R&D Center in Hamburg, one of the biggest Skin Research Centers in Europe. Furthermore, the winners get exclusive insights into our Beiersdorf partnering model.

What are the benefits of open innovation and do you think this is going to become a more popular way of working? Ever shorter product life cycles and the acceleration of knowledge generation pose a challenge to product developers all over the world. Times are over when the innovation power of a company is defined solely by its internal capabilities. The way you connect with the outside world of smart innovators on a global basis is increasingly becoming a key advantage. For us, it is not a question anymore of whether or not you do Open Innovation. It is now a question of how you do it.

Benefits of Open Innovation are, for example, faster access to ideas and solutions and the broadening of your own idea horizons.
