New Year... New Home? Home Styling Advice from Maggie at MHOR design
As we are embracing a new year, 2014, we at MHOR design are proposing a mini- series over the next few months. Our objective is to start presenting information on what makes a house a home. This is a debate that refl ects individual perspective but there are some principles that you can follow to get the best out of what you have and how you use it. We kick start the series by asking what you do in your home, how do you spend your time? This information creates an understanding of your lifestyle. Making a house a home means ensuring that whatever you do at home, you’ll enjoy doing it even more. It’s about adding quality to the experience to create an environment where you and your family can thrive. That involves thinking about the things that would make your life run more smoothly and consider what would make your home a happier place to be. What changes do you need to make to your home to ensure its supporting your lifestyle? So as we begin a new year maybe it is time to fi nally ‘ nail the niggles’ of what annoys you in your home and work to improve?
Where do you begin? Firstly, draw up a list of what annoys you, actually go into each room and think about it. Then prioritise the list and give each thing on it a “budget” (not everything will have a monetary cost some may just be a time cost). Put the list somewhere prominent so you will see it. This is your home wish list or as I refer to it “lust list”. If you don’t get the “feel” of your home right you will never love it, so take some time to think about its needs. Lists are good because it focuses the mind. Happiness is linked to fulfi llment, and often it is the small pleasures that makes us happy, like reading a book on a comfortable sofa with proper light in a peaceful spot, cooking from a recipe in a kitchen that functions as it should, soaking in a bath in a bathroom that is relaxing…So consider what makes you tick. What is key in your home?
After you prioritise then you bring in the reality, what are the constraints? Space, money, time, know how? Then its time to compromise. OK so you may not have the budget for a new kitchen but could you paint the cabinets? Replace a worktop? Provide better storage?
It’s a process. A new Year, a new home, one that fi nally works for you and your family. Over the next few months we will take you through what makes a house a home, so stay tuned! I hope you are embracing 2014 as the year of the Home!
