In Primary 6 at Newton Primary School we have been learning all about the Titanic. We have learned about: •
The main facts associated with the Titanic
• What life was like in 1912 •
The kind of people who would’ve travelled on the Titanic
• How/where the Titanic was built and what she looked like (outside and inside) • What caused the Titanic to sink
Also, we have been writing a book about the Titanic. At the start of term we were given a telegram with the name of a real passenger that was aboard the Titanic. This then became our passenger that we had to carry out research on. The research we undertook then helped us write a biography based upon our passenger. Our book consists of four diary entries which are written through the eyes of our passenger. Here is an extract of Eleanor Duncan’s diary entry part 3:
“Our room is marvellous with two, four poster beds, delicately quilted walls and beautiful, silk embroidered curtains which hang nicely over the window. A gorgeous view awaits me every time I walk into the room, a vast, blue foaming ocean that I can only just see the edge of.”
Here is an extract of Isla Price’s diary entry part 4: “Where was Arthur? Bad news was unfortunately brought to us. Tears showered out of my colossal blue eyes. However, it wasn’t just Arthur who had died…many more had died also. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reported by Cameron Sinclair P5L
P5L have enjoyed reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have been taking turns being different characters in the story when we read as a class. We have had many laughs reading some parts of the book. We have also been inspired by this book so we have been writing our own books loosely based on Roald Dahl’s story. Everyone has had favourite parts of the story, for example, when Charlie found the golden ticket or when Augustus Gloop fell into the chocolate river. Here is what some people think of the book. Josh said, “I like the way he uses lots of WOW words and he puts a lot of hard work into making the characters”. Archie said, “I like how you can picture the story in your head because of the descriptive words he uses”. Ella said, “I like how every character disappears because Mr.Willy Wonka chooses the rooms cleverly so everyone disappears apart from Charlie”.

Archie Mearns P5L First we thought of great adjectives to put in our description. Some people got to share their ideas with the class. When we started to write we all mentioned how enormously fat he was. We also described what he wore and how he looked. We used similes and we put a lot of effort into these and we really liked how they turned out. We had loads of ‘wow’ words and if you read it you could really picture the character in your head.

Augustus Gloop is a repulsive nine year old boy who only thinks about eating. His fingers look like sausages and he is as plump as a baby hippo. He has ginger hair and is very stout and chubby with blue eyes. His mum is a bad influence because she only eats chocolate too and loves him too much to tell him off. He is so incredibly fat that he can’t walk, he can only waddle.
