Dunblane Primary School’s Primary 5 Topic on the Victorians
Primary 5 were learning about the Victorians in their Social Studies topic. We looked at life in Victorian times, making comparisons between the way of life for the rich and for the poor. We learned about entertainment, work and schooling in that period of history. Using our groupwork skills, we were able to show what we had learned as we made posters, powerpoint presentations, put on plays and even puppet shows. We learned about Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and then did individual talks to the class about other famous Victorians e.g. Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, John Cadbury, Isaac Brunel, Florence Nightingale & Robert Peel.
Primary 5 thought about whether they would like to have lived in Victorian times. Children seemed to get a lot of freedom if they were from a rich family but if you were a poor child you might have been working in a factory or going up a chimney to sweep it.
In school, the cook and her team are going to make a Victorian lunch for the whole school. It will have things like mulligatawny soup, fishcake, toad in the hole, Victoria sponge and rice pudding. This has been a really interesting topic and we are looking forward to having our parents visit our classrooms when they come in to school to share in our learning. Astronomical Society Visit by Hannah Fraser P6A
On Friday 22nd November 2013, the Astronomical Society were very kind and they came to visit P6A and P6L at Dunblane Primary. P6A was first. There were three groups – group A, group B and group C. The first group for Star Grouping was group B. In Star Grouping and Constellations you got the opportunity to learn about different star groups. We had a bit of paper with dots on it. You had to join them all together and then guess what it was. It was fun.
Next, group B went to Creating a Telescope. The first thing we did was get a ruler. Then the man called Bert gave us a lens to put on the end of the ruler. Then he gave us a slightly smaller lens so we put it a bit further away from the bigger lens. When I looked out of it, it was amazing. Then we got to look at a real telescope. That activity was probably my favourite.
The very last group was Calculating Orbits. It was also very interesting. I learnt that Mercury takes 88 earth days to orbit the sun. It took Jupiter 50 years! I found that quite amazing. Terry, one of the men from the society, was extremely kind because he brought a massive shuttle and he gave it to us. Having these visitors in class was a fantastic experience and I loved it!
