It’s all Child’s Play February Fun

If you’re the sort of person who’d rather be on a warm beach or huddled by the fire than brave the chill then here are some of the delights of Winter to be enjoyed on a cold grey February day.

• •

Take time to appreciate the cold of being outdoors and heavenly contrast of rosy cheeks and fire-warmed hands indoors.

Take a walk on a frosty morning as this presents the world in a new light, with cobwebs draped on railings like Grandma’s pearl necklace and leaves outlined like frosted sugar.

• Watching your breath rise before your eyes is another of life’s simple pleasures, that we adults tend to miss in our rush to get from a to b.

Fresh leaves piled in a mound are irresistible to most children, great for kicking, picking up, throwing or simply laying on. Once soggy and brown they are perfect for stamping in and creating witches brews.

A sheet of ice on a puddle offers intrigue and challenge and crying out to be prodded with a stick or stamped on in wellies.

• Collecting icicles gives fleeting moments to admire nature’s sculptures before

they melt or snap. Take containers for collecting the icicles or ‘panes’ of ice in, then once home, experiment with adding a drop of food colouring. Watch as the dye courses through the capillaries, intricately decorating the ice.

• Curl up with a great book or a good film next to a roaring fire while icy rain and wind lash the window outside.

Roast chestnuts and marshmallows on a fire or enjoying buttery Scotch pancakes and mugs of hot chocolate or heart warming soup, for the ultimate in comfort food.

• And of course, there’s the magic of spotting the first shoots of spring.

February may not be everyone’s favourite month, yet for children with their ‘ready brek- like’ armour against the cold, and thirst to discover, enjoy and ‘live in the now’, it offers a wealth of deeply satisfying experiences and a time to pause for a while.

If you work with children you will be familiar with the mantra that there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing. So wrap up warm, rediscover your inner child and make time to appreciate the wonder of winter for yourself.
