Battles, Big Ships, and Bike Rides...

The title of this month’s article encapsulates some of the activities that the Rotary Club has been involved with over the past few weeks. Apart from the well documented fund raising events, the membership enjoys and participates in many other activities.

One of our members, Ranald Shepherd, who is an authority on the history

of battles, took a group of members and their partners, along with some of the Interact Club members from Queen Victoria School, on a guided tour of the site of the Battle of Sheriff muir. This expedition was thoroughly enjoyed by all those present, who learned a great deal about a very signifi cant event in local history.

Another member organised a visit to the Royal Naval Dockyard at Rosyth, where members were given a guided tour of the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier. Unfortunately, due to technical work, it was not possible to get on board that evening, but despite this, just to walk around it was amazing. Everyone was impressed with the scale of the engineering, and how something of this size could fl oat at all, bearing in mind approximately 90% of it is above the waterline!

Fund raising is never very far from the minds of the Rotary Club members. At the end of last month, two members, Graham Russell and Jim Gardner,

cycled 40 miles,

and walked/ jogged 18 miles across country in the Borders to help raise funds for CHAS. They were helped in this by one of our honorary members Ed Campbell, who drove the support vehicle.

Finally, the pace is accelerating as we approach our next major fund raising event the Beat Beethoven Fun “Run/ Walk”. With a number of new sponsors, and many entrants already registered, last year’s hugely successful total amount raised has already been surpassed. However, as the event is not until 20th October there is still plenty of time to join in the fun. To do so simply log on to the website wwwbeatbeethoven. co.uk or look it up on either Twitter or Facebook
