Gardener’s Tips and Advice Kindly supplied by George at MoLawn/Stockbridge Nurseries t: 821 414
Fed up of a muddy, weedy lawn, or simply tired of mowing? Well, this month I‘m going to talk you through laying an artificial lawn, i.e. the do`s and dont`s.

•
Ensure the surface to be covered is clean and smooth (debris and dirt must be removed)
If a new sub-surface is being constructed a slight fall should be incorporated to assist drainage a drop of 1cm every 2mtrs is plenty.
If there is no fall, it is recommended that a few drainage holes are made in sealed concrete. Porous
(open textured) tarmac particularly suitable as a base.
Paving slabs are not satisfactory, since after a period of time the pattern of the slabs may show on the surface of the grass.
The slabs should be removed and the sub base covered with a layer of fine aggregate.
• Artificial Grasses may be spot stuck with an approved adhesive or loose laid and fixed around the perimeter.
•
If fixed to timber the grass may be held in place with screws or small tacking nails.
• However, If you are laying on a porous surface such as an old lawn or an old gravelled area.
•
Remove turf and soil to a depth of approximately 100mm - by hand or
is
using a turf cutter and weed kill the area. Compact and level the ground using a whacker plate or roller.
• A geotextile may be laid over the compacted earth, fixing down with galvanised nails, to minimise weed growth and prevent the formulation of worm holes.
•
Lay the sub-base (Type One) should be used to a depth of 50mm to 75mm.
• Compact and level using a wacker plate or roller. If you choose timber fixings for the edge of the grass they should be installed at this point using treated tanalised timber and fixing stakes.
• Add a thin layer of fine sand or whin dust over the stone and compact again, you are then ready to lay the turf as detailed above.
• Most artificial lawn turfs come in either a two mtr wide or a four mtr wide roll, if you are planning to lay areas wider than this then the rolls can be joined using tape and glue but remember to lay the rolls in the same direction, because the turf is similar to the pile on a carpet.
•
Once laid artificial turf only needs a hard brush and if possible use a petrol/electric blower every so often to keep, clean. Pet fouling can be easily cleaned with weak washing up liquid and water mix.
•
Sit back and enjoy your low maintenance lawn!
