Beaconhurst pupils celebrate Green Flag Award

Environmentally-aware Beaconhurst pupils are proudly fl ying the Green Flag after gaining the challenging and prestigious Eco-Schools award. They were presented with the Eco fl ag following an inspection from Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Eco-Schools team. Eco-Schools is an international initiative encouraging whole school action for the environment and the award recognises the green credentials of pupils, staff and parents.

The School’s Eco Co-ordinator Dawn Haughton says: “We’re delighted to have been given this important award in recognition of the environmental initiatives we have implemented across the school. And with the new term underway, we’re gearing up for another year of working hard to maintain our environmental programme which has become a way of life for everyone at Beaconhurst.”

Schools taking part in the scheme must set up an Eco Committee, carry out environmental reviews and come up with an action plan to improve their environmental performance. They also need to monitor and evaluate that plan, establish an Eco Code and involve the whole school as well as the wider community in their actions.

To be awarded a Green Flag – representing the international standard of excellence in the Eco-Schools initiative - pupils must tackle the programme’s topics which include Litter, Biodiversity, Health and Wellbeing and

Transport. They also face inspections every two years to ensure the school is maintaining the correct Eco standards.

Beaconhurst’s Eco Committee – with representatives from each school year including the nursery – decide the topics to work on and take responsibility for pushing projects forward. They have already completed Transport and Biodiversity topics and will now concentrate on Water and Energy as well as Litter which is compulsory each year.

Younger pupils learn about planting fl owers and vegetables as well as identifying insects and birds while older children make regular visits to a Bridge of Allan care home where they entertain residents, pick up litter and tidy their garden.

Mrs Haughton says: “There is so much going on across the school and everyone gets involved in one way or another.

During the Green Flag inspection, the assessor enjoyed a tour of the school and its grounds led by Eco Committee President Fraser Morrison and fellow pupils.

Mrs Haughton says: “The pupils did really well and told the inspector everything they’ve been doing. I was so proud of how knowledgeable and enthusiastic they were while showing him round.”
