“In class our topic at the beginning of the year was ‘Inspire to Aspire’. We learned about Building our Learning Powers. We each identifi ed a character from a book we have read that inspires us and that we aspire to be more like. The character would have a strong Learning Power (Resilience, Refl ection, Resourceful, Relationships, Risk) that we would like to develop in ourselves. We then wrote a personal piece of writing about our character, how they inspire us and what we aspire to develop in ourselves and become like.”

Inspire to Aspire by Holly T The Learning Power I need to

improve on is resilience and the character I chose was George from The Famous Five. George goes through a lot so has to be able to bounce back from a lot too. In her case, the things she needs resilience for are pretty extreme. She has to be depended on even when it’s her

that needs comforted. When the going gets tough she always pulls through. To be able to carry on through a tough time is a hard thing to do and for George it’s even harder.

The third time she meets her cousins her mother falls ill. Her parents have to stay at the hospital for weeks. She is left with her horrible cook and her family so she runs away and gets tangled up in kidnappers and a long hard adventure. Bouncing back from the fact her mothers life is at stake is outstandingly diffi cult and pulling through is even harder.

Resilience for me is diffi cult, though maybe not as diffi cult as George’s situations. Maths has always been hard, especially before I found out there was a reason for it. I do this thing in my head; I call it “The Wall”. I put up a wall and say “I can’t do it” which stops me from learning anything. I’ve always tried to stop it but it never works. When I was younger I had trouble with spelling. I couldn’t remember patterns. I understand now why because of my diagnosis but it was really hard for me because I thought I just couldn’t do it.

When I read about the Famous Five I feel part of the story, like I’m there with them. I have always been impressed, inspired, intrigued and hopeful. When I start reading I never want to stop.

George always shows all of the Learning Power 50

muscles so I couldn’t pick just one. Absorption: She doesn’t think of anything but her adventure. She gets completely absorbed.

Managing Distractions: She doesn’t let anything stand in her way or distract her from her task. focused.

Noticing: She

found a clue and is great at noticing them. She knows straight away what it means.

Perseverance: She channels all her thoughts, feelings and passion into everything in her adventure and never stops until the mystery is put to rest.

In the past, if I were to get the worst marks in the class in a maths test I would get in the dumps and decide that today wasn’t my day and try and forget about the whole thing. If George was to get the worst marks in the class she would decide on the spot that she was going to improve for next week and practice and practice until she knew she was ready. She just bounces back on the spot and is so determined she always comes through.

My aspiration is to stop ‘The Wall’ and relax about everything. I want to be like George and not go and try to forget but to practice and get through! Even though I didn’t get the prize this time doesn’t mean I can’t. So after this topic, I want to have the Learning Power and be like George!

Resilience, My Next Steps: I want to break it down and chunk the challenge and take the time I need to get the answer. An important thing that I need to remember is to calm down and think it through.

If I do this and believe and let myself, I will be able to do it!
