shoptalking Clair Letton and Jesse

Marshall owners, Wigwam Toys, Brighton Wigwam toys has been running for over 12

years, however, due to the sad death of the previous owner last year, the business was put up for sale. My partner and I bought the business in March and reopened in April 2013. When we learned that Wigwam was for sale it seemed the ideal opportunity for us. The shop is a fi ve-minute walk from our home, and in the heart of our community. We have three children of our own and knew how important the shop was to the children and parents in this area. It fi ts in really well with our family life and the kids love being in the shop after school and welcoming all their friends.

When we took over the business we had

targets and fi nancial projections, which, so far, we are exceeding. We live in a very family-orientated area, with approximately 7,000 children living within walking distance of our shop. As such, we fi nd that most of our business is pocket money toys and birthday presents for school friends. Children will always have birthdays and birthday parties, regardless of the recession! We are optimistic as business continues to grow for us; next year we plan to venture into online sales, with our own website.

It’s getting hot in here

Toy World’s Kayleigh Conway speaks to independent retailers about the hot topics of the month. With July’s scorching weather boosting sales of pocket money and outdoor toys, our experts also revealed how it’s going for them in the Wooden, Plush and Tech categories.

There are a number of lines that work

really well for us, as the shop is so close to the local park and playground; outdoor toys such as our sand toys, constructable planes, frisbees, kites and micro scooters sell really well. The smaller Lego and Playmobil sets are also very popular; I think that the price points are key, around the £10 mark is the usual budget for birthday party presents, and the popularity of these brands makes them a safe bet if the customer doesn’t know the recipient particularly well. The French brand Djeco sells very well for us, and is probably one of our most popular brands. The range is huge, and the products are really beautifully designed and illustrated, with great packaging to match. The prices range from a few pounds upwards, making them attractive as pocket money items, treats and presents. We sell a large number of plush toys; top amongst them are YooHoos from Aurora, and Jellycat animals, particularly the Bashfuls range. We are also fi nding that the Craftoholic animals and the Delingos range from Marbel are starting to sell well. They are less well known, but now that our customers are aware of them, they seem to like them. We stock a large number of wooden toys including Brio trains, racing cars, and pull- alongs, as well as Hape and Le Toy Van role- play toys, and the wooden instrument and bamboo car range from Hape. We made a decision when we bought

the store to stock interesting, unusual and appealing toys that hark back to our childhoods and that of our parents. We aim to provide an offering of toys that really get played with, craft kits that actually work, and things that will inspire children›s imaginations. We are only a small shop and cannot compete with the like of Amazon, Waterstones or the big supermarkets, so, we stock beautiful things that you might not fi nd there: books from the Tate, dinnerware from France, fabulous partyware from Meri Meri, and our latest addition is the Little Seedlings range from New Zealand. We choose not to stock licensed products that are tied to bands or TV shows, or electronic items. These things move in and out of popularity so fast, it is a big risk that we could get left with stock we can’t sell. Also, these items don›t really fi t with our ethos or store image, as we specialise in more traditional toys.
