Figures 3.9–3.11 show the estimated yield and growing areas for key crops
in Benin. Maize is more widely cultivated in the southern regions than in the central zones (see Figure 3.9). The production profiles for yams, sweet pota- toes, and cassava are similar, although yam and sweet potato production is lim- ited to the southeast and northwestern areas (see Figure 3.10), while cassava is quite rare in the north of the country (see Figure 3.11). Maize yields range from 1 to 2 metric tons per hectare, while the yields of fresh roots and tubers range from 7 to 10 metric tons per hectare across the country.4
