The dip in the population growth rate during 1970–79 (Table 7.1) could
be accounted for by the mass exodus from Guinea due to the political situation and poor economic conditions. Between 1998 and 2001, almost 500,000 ref- ugees entered the forest region of Guinea from the adjacent areas of Sierra Leone and Liberia due to civil war in those two countries. Between 2000 and 2008, a significant number of refugees from Sierra Leone and Liberia returned to their countries following the end of civil conflicts in both coun- tries. In about the same period, the improving economic situation in Guinea
