adjacent periurban areas, with population densities of 100–500 per square kilometer. Although the slowing growth rate in rural populations and the rela- tively smaller increase in the total rural population compared to urban areas may potentially reduce the agricultural workforce, there may be a compensat- ing expansion in periurban agriculture to meet the food demands of urban populations, especially for vegetables.
