relatively high. The percentage of the population employed in agriculture is lower than in many West African countries, suggesting that alternative liveli- hoods are available. Nigeria’s rate of under-five malnutrition is also relatively lower than in many neighboring countries. Figure 10.4 shows Nigeria’s performance on two noneconomic correlates
of poverty, life expectancy and under-five mortality. As shown in Figure 10.4, life expectancy at birth improved from 1960 to the late 1990s, then declined
