Urbanization has increased in Côte d’Ivoire since 1960, when only 20 per-
cent of the population lived in urban areas. In 2008 almost 50 percent of the Ivorian population lived in urban areas. The high urban population growth rate is reflected in Table 5.1. Between 2000 and 2008, the urban population growth rate was four times higher than rural population growth rate. Rural- to-urban migration as well as improved health conditions in the urban areas may be important factors in the rapid urban population growth.
