Kerry Logistics has won the “Freight Forwarder of the Year” award at this year’s Payload Asia Awards 2012 in Singapore. It is the first time a Hong Kong logistics company has won this award category in an international competition. The Birmingham Chamber member company faced strong competition from finalists that included other leading global logistics companies.

wo Birmingham Chamber member organisations have won Green Apple
‘The Green Apple Environment Awards will be presented in November at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament’
Group, which manages 11,000 affordable homes and provides services to 50,000 people, has been recognised for its work in manufacturing and building low carbon timber homes, which reduce carbon emissions in manufacture and in use, and significantly reduce energy bills. Last year, the housing association opened its own
manufacturing hub, LoCaL Homes, which is currently producing one timber-framed home every day. The other winner, Aston Villa’s Restaurant VMF, has been awarded a Green Apple in recognition of its work
Community Hub in Nechells. In the first season of the allotment, 750kg of
potatoes were harvested and served in the VMF restaurant. In the coming season this will expand to a full range of vegetables, potatoes, salad items and herbs from the site. The site also features four of the 12 hives used to produce honey used at VMF. The Green Apple Environment Awards, which are
organised by The Green Organisation, will be presented in November at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament.
Honorary degree for Co-operative chief
Ben Reid, chief executive of The Midcounties Co-operative, has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Wolverhampton, in recognition of his leadership of social enterprise initiatives throughout the region. Mr Reid said: “I’m very thankful to the University for bestowing this honour and delighted to receive it as wider acknowledgement of the positive contribution that social enterprise is increasingly making to the economy, not only in the UK but around the world.” A Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants
(FCCA) and Institute of Co-operative Directors, Mr Reid has served the Co-operative Movement in a number of senior roles. Initially with Ilkeston Co-operative Society and Leicestershire Co-operative Society, he eventually rose to the post of deputy chief executive with the West Midlands Co-operative Society (later renamed The Midcounties Co-operative), in 1988, before his appointment as chief executive in 1992. Mr Reid’s commitment to Walsall is underlined by the leading
role he played in establishing the Walsall Regeneration Company, and also as chair of The Manor Hospital where he led on the opening of a new hospital in 2010.
