Event’s second serving S

olihull is set to stage its second annual food and drink festival during October. The event – ‘A Taste of Solihull’ – is being organised by the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), and will take place over three days from 5 October. Among attractions at the event will be three food and farmers’ markets, an expert wine tasting

session and a demo-kitchen in Mell Square featuring chefs from the town’s restaurants. There will also be a diverse programme of entertainment over the weekend, the highlight of which will be an appearance by tenor John Innes, who has just completed a sell-out UK tour. BID director Shirley Sturzaker said: “Last year’s event was a great success and we are bringing back

many of the favourites from 2011 together with some great new additions, a range of speciality food and farmers’ markets – and great live entertainment too. “Our aim is to give everyone a fantastic weekend - filled with live music, fun

and great food and drink. We also want more people to be able to try new restaurants, cuisines and tastes.”

JOINING FORCES TO FIGHT CRIME

BY SALLY BOURNER CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT, SOLIHULL POLICE

Cutting crime and its causes

Crime continues to fall which is good news. That means that no more than two people a day experience the traumatic and life changing experience of having their home burgled and fewer than one person a day is robbed. In summary, a total of approximately 32 crimes

‘Solihull has the second lowest adult re-offending rate in the West Midlands’

We continue to work with partners and local people to drive this down further recognising the life changing impact of crime on victims and their families. A significant factor that contributes to

reducing crime and improving trust and confidence in policing and the criminal justice system is the focus we bring, together with our partners, to tackling the small number of people who offend and create disproportionate harm and misery within our local communities. I am pleased to share that we are consistently seeing improving trends in solving and resolving those crimes that cause the greatest harm to victims particularly burglary and robbery. Our performance in these crucial areas is

better than last year and we are currently exceeding the local delivery milestones agreed at the start of 2012/13. So much of work to address and change

offenders’ behaviour is undertaken in partnership with others, for example our colleagues in Probation and Health. Last month data for 2011/12 was published about adult reoffending. Solihull has the second lowest adult re-offending rate in the West Midlands and one of the lowest nationwide. That’s good news for local people.
