FUTURE FACES FUTURE FACES DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BUSINESS TALENT New face: Ammandeep Kaur Ammandeep takes Emerging leaders: (left to right) Jo Alcock, Crystal Johnson, Anita Dryden, Kelly Quaye and Liz Kirchhoff Jo’s a leading light
Future Faces member Jo Alcock has been developing her leadership skills on the global stage, thanks to a link up with the American Library Association. Jo, a researcher at Birmingham City University’s ‘Evidence Base’ department, which carries out research for libraries in the higher education sector, explains how the programme works
The programme provides the opportunity for a number of young professionals to develop leadership skills and get involved in leadership opportunities within the organisation. It’s a competitive process with around 75 places each year and I am the first Emerging Leader participant from the UK.
I
There are three main components to the programme: 1. Attendance at ALA Midwinter Meeting in January including an intensive leadership training day (this year in Dallas, TX)
2. Group work between January and June on a project for one of the special interest groups within the American Library Association
3.Attendance at ALA Annual Conference in June including further leadership training and a poster presentation of your project.
’ve recently completed my time as an Emerging Leader for the American Library Association (ALA).
My group’s research project, sponsored by New Members Round Table, looked at the feasibility of an association wide event to introduce members to the different groups within ALA.
‘It is expected that Emerging Leaders will give back to ALA by taking on a leadership position’
We gathered feedback from a number of different sources and analysed the information, and helped a presidential taskforce organise a pilot event at this year’s conference. Our report is available at /
bit.ly/el2012teamm. Following the programme, it is expected that
Emerging Leaders will give back to ALA by taking on a leadership position. I am chairing an Online Discussion Forum committee on behalf of the ALA New Members Round Table, and co- ordinate themed discussions on the mailing list. I also hope to introduce new methods of online communication such as themed synchronous chat (e.g. via social media).
Secrets of business success
Leading business figures Simon Topman and Jason Wouhra will be revealing the secrets of their success at a Future Faces event being hosted at Clarke Willmott in Edmund Street on 4 October. The pair – two of the most successful businessmen in the region, who run Acme Whistles and
East End Foods respectively – will be interviewed by Chamber press and PR manager John Lamb about their careers to date. More about this event and what advice Simon and Jason have for those who want to follow in their footsteps will be in the next issue of Chamberlink.

up placement Sociology student Ammandeep Kaur has joined the Future Faces and Chamber Executive Club team on a year’s work placement. Ammandeep, who is studying at Aston
University, is working alongside Rachel Flanagan, manager of individual memberships, during her 12 month stay at the Chamber. Ammandeep said: “I decided to undertake a
placement year to increase my employability and help me gain more experience of the working world. I applied to the Birmingham Chamber Group because of the exposure I would have of their connections with other businesses. “While working on the Future Faces and the Chamber Executive Club, I am hoping to meet new people and gain the confidence that I need when approaching a career in business.”
Office behaviour
It was the hit TV show ‘The Office’ which showed how difficult it can be to get on with the people you work with. Do you have a boss who is as pretentious as the
programme’s David Brent – or co-workers who are as flawed as the rest of the workforce at the fictitious Wernham Hogg paper merchants? In order to address that and other workplace
issues, Future Faces held a workshop entitled ‘Your Behavioural Style’. The workshop aimed to build a better
understanding of why individuals behave in the way they do, and how things can be improved. The free workshop was a huge success, with
one attendee, Grace Quinn, a new Future Faces member from Meridian Private Client, saying she had found it extremely useful. She added: “I really enjoyed the talk. I thought
it was really interesting and useful to sit back and work out how I work and how others work.”
