INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN BRIEF

UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) is holding a seminar in conjunction with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aimed at businesses who want to gain a foothold in the developing countries of Asia and the Pacific. The seminar takes place on 29 October at

the premises of British Expertise in Grosvenor Gardens, London SW1. The event will feature a presentation by Jeffery Taylor, a senior procurement specialist with ADB. For details contact Cheryl Boxall on 0845 603 0084 or email c.boxall@afbs.org.uk

W

hile it is still early days, the so- called ‘Arab Spring’ may end up giving UK firms – including

those in the West Midlands – a boost. That’s because countries in the region most affected by the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings are rushing to become part of the European business community. As part of this, three North African countries have signed up to the business support network

network, which is a key instrument in the European Union's strategy to boost growth and jobs. The EEN brings together around 600 business support organisations from more than 50

countries, and helps small companies seize the unparalleled business opportunities in the EU Single Market. Other countries which have signed up recently include Albania, which joined the EEN in March earlier this year. Sunny Claire, EEN project manager, said: “One of our services, the partner service, is designed

to help companies to go international. Our business database contains thousands of company profiles. When you get in touch with the Network, we enter your cooperation offer or request into the database. You will then receive updates on companies interested in the same kind of cross-border business as you. With hundreds of new company profiles added every week, our business co-operation database is Europe’s largest. You can also meet potential business partners in person at matchmaking events organised by the network across the whole of Europe. “We can also assist you in technology transfer, EU law and standards, intellectual property and public procurement opportunities. Furthermore, our services are free of charge.”

The one millionth electronic application for a Certificate of Origin was certified by the documentation team at Birmingham Chamber of Commerce in August. Certificates of Origin are issued to companies who are exporting overseas to prove where the goods are manufactured and are used for official and commercial reasons. The documentation team has been processing Certificates of Origin through e-z Cert, which was set

up 12 years ago. The one millionth application was certified by the Birmingham Chamber for a logistics company based in Birmingham which obtained the certified document on behalf of a local exporter. Last year the documentation team issued 20,000 certificates of origin but this figure is increasing

rapidly and this year they are on target to do over 22,000. Peter Moore, head of international documentation, said the company that is driving the figures

upwards is Jaguar Land Rover. He said: “We issue a lot of certificates of origin for their exports, many of which are now to China.”

Businesses interested in providing services and products to organisations operating in two key African countries may be interested in a special trip being arranged during November. The trip is to Kenya and Uganda, to visit the

various international aid/donor organisations based in Nairobi and Entebbe. Both cities are host to numerous United Nations agencies, who together spend billions of pounds on aid programmes each year, both in Kenya and Uganda and other East African countries. Firms interested in building ties with these

two countries who want to find out more about the trip – which takes place between 26 – 30 November – should contact Cheryl Boxall on 0845 603 0084 or email: info@afbs.org.uk
