Sukhi Ghuman guest speaker at IAB dinner I

nternational entrepreneur and CEO of Octavian Security Sukhi Ghuman is to be the chief guest speaker at the

Institute of Asian Businesses (IAB) 25th anniversary dinner and awards. Compering the annual event will be actor and comedian, Kulvinder Ghir, star of popular TV show 'Goodness Gracious Me' and the hit film “Bend it Like Beckham”. The event takes place on 17 November at the

International Convention Centre in Birmingham. Sukhi Ghuman (pictured) was born in 1977 in

Leicester to a Sikh family. Suffering family financial issues in his early years, Sukhi is now worth £7 million and credits his success to the grit and determination he acquired from his grandmother. Having graduated from Nottingham Trent

University with LLB Honours in 1999, Sukhi completed the legal practice course at De Montfort University and began his career as a trainee lawyer with regional firm, Brethertons

Solicitors. After qualifying as a lawyer, he then moved to City law firm, Nabarro Nathanson, where he handled major corporate accounts. In 2003, he started the security business,

Octavian, of which he is now CEO, and it is the first security firm to employ ex-Ghurkas. This year, Sukhi set up Octavian Pharma a new entity aimed at procuring and distributing pharmaceutical and cosmetic products throughout North America. He has won a long list of entrepreneurial

awards and lives in Nottinghamshire with his wife Kiran. They have two girls and one boy. The IAB silver jubilee event will include four

awards, business/business person of the year, outstanding contribution to society, young entrepreneur of the year and international business of the year. A charity prize draw will also take place in aid of Cure Leukaemia.

Lord Mayor attends Eid event

Businesses attending an Eid networking event were informed on where they could go for financial support when the banks say no. Director of Ludgate Finance, Richard Mason said the company had raised over £2 million this year to help small businesses. He said: “We are a serious alternative to bank finance in helping profitable established businesses to grow. Our deals are quick to arrange and can be done in less than four weeks.” Birmingham’s Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress,

Councillor John Lines and his wife Kathleen with over 250 people attended the event at the Holiday Inn, Birmingham Airport. Businesses were told how the courses and

services of Birmingham’s newest and largest college (in terms of students) could be of benefit to them. Mike Hopkins, principal and chief executive of South and City College Birmingham which was formed through a merger in August, said the new college now has 25,000 plus students each year. Over 1,200 staff work at five main campuses and four smaller centres and the college has a turnover in excess of £60 million. He said: “This was an excellent event and

extremely well attended and showed the strength of support the IAB has. It gave me a chance to bring business colleagues up to date with what is happening with our new enlarged college and hopefully how we can help the Asian business community even more in the future." Qari Ghulam Mustafa Naeemi provided a recitation from the Quran and IAB executive
