Who’sWho? - Non-Surgical ● Cosmetic Doctor
Cosmetic doctors differ from plastic surgeons in that they are not eligible to and do not hold NHS consultant posts in any surgical discipline.
A cosmetic doctor should be a qualified medical practitioner, with a minimum qualification of MBBS, and must be registered and licensed to practise with the
GMC.They are able to perform non-surgical aesthetic procedures, under local or topical anaesthesia.
A reputable cosmetic doctor is likely to be a member of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD), which works to encourage regulation within the industry and help to make aesthetics safer for the general public (‘What to Look For’, p 156). Although these procedures are not surgical, they should not be undertaken lightly.

Dermatologists are medical practitioners who specialise in the treatment of skin diseases and work towards improving skin health. Cosmetic dermatology is a relatively new concept in the UK, but for the purposes of this Guide, a cosmetic dermatologist is a cosmetic doctor who appears on the GMC specialist register for dermatology and can perform non-surgical treatments such as injectables.
A cosmetic dermatologist will have an understanding of the skin anatomy, physiology and ageing as well as the expertise in the recognition and treatment of skin
disease.They may be a member of the British Cosmetic Dermatology Group (BCDG) and likely to be a member of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD). For more information on these groups, see ‘What to Look For’, p 156.
● Cosmetic Dentist
We determine cosmetic dentists to be qualified dentists or orthodontists who, as well as general dentistry work, also undertake cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of the teeth, gums and smile.
In the UK, cosmetic dentists are also able to perform non-surgical aesthetic procedures to the face, such as Muscle Relaxing Injections (p 108) and Dermal Fillers (p 80).
Currently any qualified dentist can offer cosmetic dentistry and no UK postgraduate qualification is recognised in cosmetic dentistry, so it might be wise to check the website of the British Association of Cosmetic Dentists (BACD) which insists that their members have carried out a minimum of 75 hours of verifiable post-graduate education in cosmetic dentistry in the last two years (see ‘What to Look for’, p 156).
● Cosmetic Nurse
Cosmetic or aesthetic nurses work either independently or with plastic surgeons and cosmetic doctors providing many popular non-surgical procedures.
You can check whether your nurse is registered using the Nursing and Midwifery Council's database.
Botox (or Muscle Relaxing Injections) must only be administered by a Nurse Independent Prescriber because
it is a licensed medicine, although they should only prescribe 'off-label' where it is accepted clinical practice (the Department of Health website,
www.dh.gov.uk has more info).
