EXPERTS A.

Dr Paul Cronin Stretch marks are very hard to treat and prevention is always the best recommendation. Cocoa butter and other deep moisturisers can reduce the appearance during times of maximum weight gain. However if they have occurred a few things have been known to help. Dermarollers can be beneficial as can laser resurfacing Fraxel is probably the best one. Many people also benefit from various skin tightening procedures such asThermage.

I’ve decided to treat myself for my 50th birthday. I can’t afford a facelift but I’d like to give my face a makeover. Someone has suggested a thread lift but I’m not sure what it is. Can you elaborate?

Mr Douglas McGeorge I do not think thread lifting is a good option. The threads are not cheap, they cut out and I have not seen a good long term result. You should consult a good plastic surgeon who can discuss the options available, their suitability and their limitations to allow you to come to an informed decision.

I had Botox for the first time 2 weeks ago. I love the affect but I was wondering how long it will last and how often I’ll need it touching up? does the surgery take?

Dr AndrewWinter The results of Botox vary person to person, but on average you can expect the results to last between 3-5 months. If you continue to have Botox regularly, it does tend to last longer because you are weakening the muscles. Botox patients that visit consistently every 3-4 months do not lose the effect of the Botox when that schedule is maintained.

I carry all my weight on my sides (ie. love handles) but have no weight on my bum or hips. Is there a surgical solution to my problem please?

Mr Douglas McGeorge Liposuction is an ideal treatment for "love handles".This can be carried out under a local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of the area treated. If you keep your weight steady after treatment it will give a long term result.

I’m looking for a plastic surgeon that specialises in rhinoplasty in my area. How can I find out if the surgeon I choose has extensive experience in this form of plastic surgery?

Mr Atul Khanna Most surgeons performing such surgery have websites and generally state their interests on their websites. It would not be unreasonable to e-mail the surgeon or his/her secretary to establish whether he/she has extensive experience or not.

At the consultation most surgeons will show patients photographs of their previous work and this will be helpful. Surgeons who perform rhinoplasty surgery are Plastic, ENT or Maxillofacial surgeons. It is important to establish whether the surgeon is on the specialist register and are members of their respective professional associations.

I want a facelift and have booked two consultations. What's the most important thing I should ask? Also, should I see more than two surgeons?

Miss Caroline Mills The most important question is whether my surgeon is doing facial plastic surgery on a regular basis and is used to undertaking facelift procedures.

In terms of how many surgeons you should see before choosing, there is no magic number. In fact, you don't want to see too many, as different practitioners may have different opinions and it can be overwhelming. If they do regular facial plastic surgery, you like the look of their work from before and after photographs, and you feel comfortable with them, then you should trust your instincts.
