Who’s Who? - Surgical ● Plastic Surgeon


In the UK, any medical practitioner can call themselves a ‘cosmetic’,‘aesthetic’ or ‘plastic’ surgeon, regardless of whether they have any surgical qualifications. However,we define a ‘plastic surgeon’ as a surgeon who is either eligible to or has taken up a consultant appointment in plastic surgery in the NHS and who is on the GMC specialist register for plastic surgery.


● Face Surgeon


We define a face surgeon as either an oral and maxillofacial or ENT (ear, nose and throat) consultant-level surgeon who is on the GMC specialist register for that discipline.


Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained in both dentistry and facial surgery and perform surgery of the jaw and underlying facial structure, including soft tissue and bone, as well as cosmetic procedures for the face and neck.


● Eye Surgeon


Eye surgeons, also known as ophthalmologists or oculoplastic surgeons, are defined in this guide as surgeons who are either eligible to or have taken up consultant posts on the NHS within the fields of ophtalmology or oculoplastic surgery.


Ophtalmologists specialise in medical and surgical treatment of the eye, including vision problems as well as treatment of the surrounding tissue.


● Breast Surgeon


In this guide, breast surgeons are defined as surgeons who are eligible to or have taken up NHS consultant posts in breast oncoplastic surgery – reconstructive surgery of the breast after cancer treatment – and are on the GMC specialist register for that discipline.


A number of breast oncoplastic surgeons also perform the full range of aesthetic breast surgery procedures in their private practice.

A specialist breast surgeon should be a member of the Association of Breast Surgeons (ABS) and/or the British Association of Surgical Oncology (BASO), which are professional organisations dedicated to improving breast cancer care in the UK.

An oculoplastic is trained in ophthalmology and then subspecialises in oculoplastic surgery, which incorporates surgery to the eye structure and surrounding facial areas as well as the tear system.


Oculoplastic surgeons have their own specialist society, the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS), and again will not necessarily be members of BAAPS or BAPRAS. See 'What to Look For', p 156.


ENT surgeons are trained in the surgical and medical treatment of the ears, nose, throat, head and neck, including some facial cosmetic surgery.


Look for membership of organisations like the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BAOM) and the British Association of Head and Neck Surgery (ENT UK) – see 'What to Look For' (p 156).


Plastic surgeons are trained to perform the full spectrum of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.There are a number of professional bodies, such as the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), which can offer further guidance for patients (‘What to Look For’ section, p 156).
