CHOOSE YOUR TREATMENT Volumisers

In recent years, it has come to the attention of the medical aesthetics industry that lines and wrinkles aren’t the only things we need to deal with in order to turn back the clock on our faces.

What is it?

One major factor in the ageing process is the loss of volume from certain key areas of the face, as fat pads - which we may have hated in our youth - begin to diminish.

Volumisers are designed to help replenish some of that lost volume and give us back that rounded, youthful look. When the concept first came out, there was a bit of a ‘pillow face’ epidemic amongst celebrities who went too far, but techniques have advanced since then and today’s volumising treatments can produce a very natural looking fullness.

Who is suitable?

There are a number of different volumisers on the market these days, and a thorough consultation with an aesthetic practitioner will determine which is the best for you. Most of the Dermal Filler (p 84) ranges also have a volumising product – although this will have a shorter longevity than most of the options below - and Fat

Transfer (p 92) is another option. What’s the treatment like?

Most volumising products are injectable and are injected deeper into the dermis than fillers, often in the mid-face area. Sculptra is one of the better known products on the market, and is known as a ‘tissue stimulator’. Poly-L-Lactic acid is injected deep into the dermis to stimulate collagen production. You won’t see results immediately, but you should start to notice a difference after six weeks and that will continue for up to two years.

Radiesse works in a similar way to Sculptra in that it stimulates collagen production over time, but it also produces an immediate result. Radiesse is made from calcium-based microspheres and results last for at least a year, before the product breaks down and is reabsorbed by the body. It contains a built-in anaesthetic, so treatment should be quite comfortable.

Aquamid provides immediate and lasting volumisation of the desired area. Made from 97.5 per cent water and 2.5 per cent polyacrylamide, it is not broken down over time, but actually bio-integrates with your body, so that collagen and blood vessels grow into it. It is described by many practitioners as an ‘injectable implant’

DrTracy Mountford explains why, with over 20 years of experience in facial rejuvenation techniques, she offers Sculptra as her volumising treatment of choice

Although I use traditional dermal fillers which give immediate benefit, I am increasingly turning to Sculptra to give natural volume replacement in selected patients.

The ideal candidate for Sculptra treatment is a person who has lost the lovely soft, rounded features of youth; someone whose face is becoming more angular and gaunt in appearance. This can happen as early as the mid to late 30s.The beauty of Sculptra is that the patient still looks like themselves, just subtly fresher and more youthful.

As with all medical cosmetic procedures, it is important to consult with a practitioner who is fully trained in the procedure and is performing a sufficient number of treatments. It is important for a patient to see

‘before and after’ photographs of procedures that a practitioner has performed and to have the opportunity to discuss the treatment in full.

The main message is, if you want a quick fix, Sculptra will not be the treatment for you. It is very much a procedure for those people who are happy to be patient for the long-term benefit.
