CHOOSE YOUR TREATMENT Male Breast Reduction Surgery AKA:Moob Job/Moob Reduction.

Maybe it’s to do with the amount of media coverage the problem has been getting, but the number of men seeking treatment for their 'moobs' has been steadily rising over the last couple of years.

What is it?

The problem of man boobs, officially known as gynaecomastia, can be divided into two basic types - 'true gynaecomastia', where the breast like appearance is caused by an excess of glandular tissue, often caused by over-exposure to certain hormones, and 'pseudo-gynaecomastia', which is due to fatty tissue and can be treated using Liposuction.

Male breast reduction surgery aims to leave men with a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

Who does it?

● Plastic Surgeon ● Breast Surgeon Who is suitable?

You first need to assess whether yours is 'pseudo-' or 'true' gynaecomastia and a surgeon should be able to identify this for you at consultation. For information on 'pseudo-gynaecomastia' and its treatment, see box.

If your problem is true gynaecomastia, this is a complex surgical procedure, so all the normal rules apply.

What’s the treatment like? In order to minimise scarring and produce the best

With rising obesity levels I am seeing more and more male patients with pseudo-gynaecomastia caused by fatty tissue excess.

cosmetic effect, the incision is usually made in the lower half of the areola. The excess glandular tissue is then excised through this very small keyhole excision.

Sometimes this may need to be combined with liposuction – either at the time of surgery or later - and, in very extreme cases, where a full breast has formed, further incisions may need to be made, or you may even have to undergo a full mastectomy.

What happens afterwards?

There will be some swelling and discomfort in the chest area and if your surgery was performed using a general anaesthetic you will need to give yourself time to allow the effects to wear off.

You can usually return to work and other everyday activities after about a week, although strenuous activities and vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks.

Will I have a scar?

Although there will be a small scar, as this is sited in the areola it is not very noticeable.

Cost From £3,000 to £5,000

Cosmetic breast specialist Mr PhilipTurton comments on a growing problem BEFORE

It is uncommon for it to form because of other health problems and many men who request a male breast reduction are overweight. Some patients may have lost their excess weight but the fat has failed to shift from the pectoral area of the chest.

In some men, the fatty excess also stretches the overlying skin in the nipple area, giving a pendulous breast appearance. It is likely that some men are unfortunately more prone than others to deposit fat in the chest area. I commonly use liposuction to perform a male breast reduction where there is a fatty component. Although it is possible to have this procedure done while awake, most patients prefer a quick general anaesthetic.

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes per side, depending on the volume to remove and I will usually do it as a day case. The surgery is however always carried out in a dedicated operating theatre.

AFTER

Usually the only signs of surgery are two little scars measuring 2mm, which are placed in a skin crease so that they heal inconspicuously. The use of local anaesthetic during the procedure seems to completely eliminate pain post procedure.
