CHOOSE YOUR TREATMENT Medical Micro-Needling
AKA: Dermaroller/Skin Needling.A new buzz word in aesthetics,medical micro-needling has had a surge in popularity over the past couple of years,with stars such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt rumoured to be big fans.
What is it?
The procedure relies on the body’s self-heal mechanism - producing tiny puncture wounds in the skin, which stimulates the body to produce more collagen to compensate.
A multi-purpose treatment, skin needling can be used purely to promote plumper skin and a healthy glow, or to treat blemishes such as scars, stretch marks and even cellulite. Some practitioners even use it to stimulate hair growth.

This is another one-size-fits-all treatment - it’s non-surgical, so although a full consultation with a medical practitioner is recommended prior to treatment, there are very few contraindications.
Whether you’re worried about ageing, scars, cellulite or even just want to boost a dull complexion, medical micro-needling can help.
What’s the treatment like?
Your practitioner should apply a local anaesthetic cream quite liberally to your face - this is a moderately painful treatment.
Then the micro-needling device - a sterile roller with hundreds of tiny needles sticking out - is rolled repeatedly over the skin to make hundreds of miniature puncture
wounds.This then stimulates the skin to produce new collagen and elastin and generate new cells to repair the damage, leaving you with plumper, smoother skin.
The device is usually single-use - try to make sure that you see your practitioner take yours out of the packet, so you know that it hasn’t been used on anyone before you.
There are several different micro-needling devices on the market, but probably the most popular is the Genuine Dermaroller.
From the same manufacturers comes the Derma-Stamp, which works on the same principle.About ten needles are concentrated close together on the end of a stamping device, which is used to deal with small, deep
scars and pock marks.
Some advanced practitioners combine medical micro-needling with Dermal HydratingTreatments (p 87) for faster and more impressive results in the fight against ageing.
What happens afterwards?
You will be quite red after the treatment, but this should fade quickly and can easily be covered with Mineral Make-Up (p 111) - your practitioner will probably have some of this in the clinic which they can apply for you if you don’t want to walk out looking like you’ve had something done.
This isn’t a quick fix - a course of treatments is usually required, and some practitioners like to combine micro-needling with Cosmeceuticals (p 77) to try to speed things along and get the best results.
It can take up to six weeks before you start to see results, but they will continue to improve over the next few months.
