The Cambridge University Sainsbury Laboratory has been shortlisted for one of the UK's most prestigious architec- tural awards, The Stirling Prize. The contemporary building was one of three projects in the RIBA 'mid-list' designed by Stanton Williams Architects. The Stirling Prize is awarded to the

architects of the project built or designed in Britain, ‘which has made the greatest contribution to the evolu- tion of architecture in the past year’. The building is very radical in its design and was driven by functionality in its brief to provide a new international research facility in plant science. The Stirling Prize will be presented

on October 13 and the current holder is Zaha Hadid's Evelyn Grace Academy.

UK architects are 94% white: Race for Opportunity comments on need for diverse recruitment

Findings from the RIBA and Fees Bureau’s 2012 Employment and Earnings Survey have been released, showing that the ethnicity of architects is increasingly predominately white. Sandra Kerr OBE, director of Race for Opportunity, comments on why it is important the profession must change: “These are disappointing employment figures from the architectural profession. That 94 per cent of the UK’s architects are white indicates that the issue of diversity is not firmly on the profession’s radar.

“We know that the STEM industries

traditionally struggle to attract and retain Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates, yet significant effort has been put in over recent years to address this – with some headway being made. However, these RIBA statis- tics show that despite recognising that the architecture profession as a whole does not reflect the diversity of the nation’s population the architecture industry is failing to engage with diverse candidates.

“It is widely accepted that diversity can

lead to more creative thinking, and inno- vation is certainly something that drives the architectural profession forward. Yet ensuring fair progression and balanced representation of ethnic minorities in a given workforce from a standing start can be challenging.” For more information on how archi-

design principles of planning proposals both at pre-application stage and as part of the application process itself. Chaired by Peter Studdert, an

adviser to English Heritage and the Design Council CABE, their first projects will include reviewing the upcoming application for Chobham Manor, along with other building and public realm projects within the Park and surrounding communities.

Decisions Team will take over from the Olympic Delivery Authority Planning Decisions Team. It will operate as an independent arm of the London Legacy Development Corporation and will consider major new developments for the Park and the surrounding area.
