Students spill the beans on community design project

Two architecture graduates from Birmingham City University have been awarded funding from Starbucks, for a community design project in rural Staffordshire. 22 year old Dale Hickman and

25 year old Timothy Rushton – who have both recently graduated from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design – applied for the £2,000 grant from Starbucks Youth Action in March in hope of funding a community design project in Stone, Staffordshire. The project titled ‘Hayes Trail’

will see the development of a woodland walk – creating a safer access route through the local woods and allowing the commu- nity to enjoy the area. Dale and Tim will work alongside second year students on the BA (Hons) Architecture course to complete

the project which is expected to take around three weeks. Dale said, “We are extremely

grateful to have been awarded the funds which will enable us to com- plete the project and make a real difference to the local community. This project follows on from the success of last years ‘Hayes Bridge’ project, where second year archi- tecture students developed a bridge structure to allow easier access to the woodland area for local community groups.” The Starbucks Youth Action

programme aims to inspire young people from across the UK and Ireland to make a difference in their community. Offering funding and supporting young people, encouraging them to develop and bring to life projects that are important to them.

When it was discovered that standard opening windows were not offering sufficient ventilation at Downham Health & Leisure Centre, Lewisham, the decision was taken to find an alternative, cost-effective solution with ReynaersAirmax parallel opening windows providing the answer. In operation the standard, top hung windows at the centre were simply not delivering the anticipated ven- tilation levels. Replacing the 79 standard openers with Reynaers Airmax parallel opening windows solved the problem. Each provides high efficiency ventilation having

the ability to allow air to circulate around the entire perimeter of the window, sig- nificantly increasing the natural ventilation levels throughout.
