WBT ‘Baby boom’ is gathering pace
The reigning World Mixed Pairs champion Simon Skelton has announced that he and his partner Joanne - an international bowler in her own right - are expecting their second child. Congratulations to them both from everyone at Nationwide Bowler. And a memo to the WBT chiefs: might be time to start building that crèche, what with all the new arrivals over the past few years!

oung bowler bags top Sky Sports award
A young bowler from Somerset has received a prize for his bowling exploits from top broadcaster Sky Sports. Zac Lavers, aged 15, was named Sky Sports Living for Sport ‘Student of the Year, 2011’ for the South West after joining a community lawn bowls project at Taunton Bowling Club. He will now join 11 other regional finalists at a UK awards ceremony at Wembley Stadium in January
Popple pulls on her running shoes for VIBE
England international Catherine Popple from Peterborough has raised a total of £1,067 in aid of Visually Impaired Bowls England after completing a sponsored half-marathon.
The Huntingdonshire ace completed the Great Eastern Half Marathon on October 9, in two hours, 20 minutes and 58 seconds.
And for those of you who don’t
know, a half-marathon is a heck of a distance - 13.1 miles in actual fact!
Members of her own club, Peterborough BC, plus county and international team colleagues were among those who dug deep to support Catherine in her efforts, with all money raised going to support the World Blind Bowls Championships that will be held in England in 2013.
Catherine said: “I was delighted to be able to complete the run in
such a good time - and without stopping too!
“I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me for this run, and am really pleased to be able to hand over this amount to such a good cause as Visually Impaired Bowls England.”
Meanwhile, Nationwide Bowler’s assistant editor Michael McEwan recently completed his first-ever full marathon.
He ran the 26.2-mile Loch Ness Marathon - generally regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the whole of the UK - in aid of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, raising just under £1,000. “It was worth the months of training and excruciating pain on the day to finally stagger over that finish line,” he said.
Michael has subsequently signed-up to run two more marathons in 2012, in Edinburgh and Berlin.
