There’s more to these destinations than bowling...

CYPRUS It’s said Mark Antony presented this island to Cleopatra as a token of his affection. Take one look at the place and you’ll see why. Cyprus’ 800-kilometre-long coastline boasts some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. Inland, meanwhile, sleepy villages dot pine-cloaked hills, and Byzantine monasteries lie hidden in the Troodos Mountains.

TUNISIA Tunisia offers a great introduction to North Africa. All over the country, medinas, souks and mosques freckle towns and villages, while ancient cities give way to salt lakes and citrus groves. Down in the south, meanwhile, the mysterious Berber tribes dwell in the caves that edge the Sahara Desert.

But how do you safeguard your travel plans? In a nutshell, only buy a bowling break that’s ATOL protected. ATOL is a government scheme that means, if the unexpected happens, you won’t be left stranded or out of pocket.

While all Thomson or First Choice holidays are ATOL protected, you’d be surprised how many small bowling holiday companies aren’t ATOL bonded. Look out for the stamp, though, and peace of mind is all yours. It’s the only sure-fire way of knowing your holiday is fully protected. DALAMAN, TURKEY Known as the Turquoise Coast, Dalaman’s shoreline is a chain of coves, bays and long stretches of sand. But the coast is just the tip of the iceberg. The region’s mountainous backbone is encrusted with traditional hamlets that can be explored on 4x4 safaris. Dalaman is also close to historical sites like Ephesus, once the second biggest city in the Roman Empire.

MALTA

Malta is one of the smallest countries in the world, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to tourism. It’s got a spectacular coastline, great dive sites, and a capital city that’s like one giant museum. Valletta was built by the Knights Hospitallier in the 16th century and is bumper-to-bumper with ancient palaces, Baroque churches and knights’ hostels.

COSTA DEL SOL, SPAIN Stretched along Spain’s southernmost coast, the Costa del Sol has long been its holiday Mecca. And once you see the beaches, you’ll get why Brits arrive here in their droves every summer. Almost everywhere you go, golden sands rule the shores. Beyond the coast, you’ll find cities like Granada and Seville, with their Moorish palaces and fiery fiestas.
