BIIBC Under-18 Mixed Championship
Future stars shine at Stanley S
tanley Indoor Bowls Club played host to the third staging of the BIIBC
Under-18 Mixed Championship, where the country’s leading young bowlers proved that the future is, indeed, very bright for the sport.
The event, previously held at Newport IBC and, before that, the Jim Baker Stadium in County Antrim, saw some of the best male and female bowlers in Great Britain and Ireland team-up to do battle in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours disciplines, with an overall team title also up for grabs.
Each participating team consisted of five from six nominated players, with a minimum of one male or female in each side.
England, Scotland and Wales both sent two teams each to take on other opponents from Ireland and the Channel Islands.
The Singles was very much the ‘Scottish show’, with the two representatives from north of the Border battling it out for the gold medal.
In the end, Connor Milne of Garioch IBC had too much in the tank for his opponent and compatriot Jonathon Craigens of Lanarkshire, running out a 14-1, 7-2 winner. Jake Phillips of Wales beat his fellow countryman Joe Mower in the 3rd/4th place play-off.
Mower made up for his Singles disappointment by teaming-up with Jordan Davies to take the Pairs title. The Welsh duo defeated Katherine Rednall and Travis Mellor 7-6, 9-1, after having overcome the Channel Islands’ Ryan Videgrain and Ross Davies in the semis. Videgrain and Davies were then defeated in the 3rd/4th place play-off by England’s Hayley MacDonald and Alex
Walton, who had lost to compatriots Rednall and Davies in the other semi. The Triples and Fours finals were both ‘all-English’ affairs. BJ Byles, Chelsea Tomlin and Thomas Segolo teamed-up to beat Edward Elmore, Matthew Ray and Connor Cinato in the final of the Triples.
They took the first set 11-4, but were pegged back in the second, 9-3. That forced a one-end tie-break for the title which Byles, Tomlin and Segolo claimed.
The 3rd/4th place play-off ended in victory for Wales, with Jessica Berry, James Davies and Scott Loosemore beating Ireland’s Chloe Watson, Courtney Meneilly and Stephen Coleman, 15-1, 7-5. In the Fours, meantime, Hayley MacDonald, Matthew Ray, Alex Walton and Connor Cinato were too strong for Katherine

Rednall, Chelsea Tomlin, Thomas Segolo and Trevis Mellor, running- out 4-3, 6-4 winners. In the all-Wales 3rd/4th place play-off, Shane Hill, Bryony Thomas-Noy, Liam Bouse and Jarrad Jones defeated Jessica Berry, James Davies, Scott Loosemore and Jordan Davies, 11-7, 5-8, 1-0.
At the end of all of the action, ‘England 2’ finished top of the overall standings, with 29 points after winning eight of their 12 matches.
‘England 1’ were in second spot, just one point adrift of their fellow countrymen, with ‘Wales 1’ third, a further two points off the pace.
‘Scotland 1’ came home in fourth place on 20 points, followed by ‘Wales 2’ and ‘Scotland 2’. Ireland finished second to last on 13 points, with the Channel Islands propping up the table on 11 points.
