LB Bowlshave added leading crown green bowler Simon Coupe to their team. Current Waterloo champion Coupe has joined the select group of players promoting the Wolverhampton-based clothing manufacturer’s range.

That includes made-to-order bowls club tops, individual tops, short and long sleeved shower- proof tops and, currently being designed, waterproofs. Lawson Bailey, of LB Bowls, was delighted to have sealed Coupe’s backing.

“I’m please to have signed up one of the leading players in the game of crown green,” said Bailey. “I’m looking forward to working with Simon to produce clothing for the crown greener.” Simon’s image and success on the Crown Green has always been of such a high standard, from

county to individual competition success, along with enjoying local leagues and Super League. Simon joins indoor stars Simon Skelton, the world ranked no.5 and current WBT Mixed Pairs champion, Debbie Stavrou, a two-time Ladies’ Matchplay champion, and Janice Gower, an England indoor international, who is also a stalwart of the crown green scene.

Coupe revealed that he found the opportunity to make a contribution to LB’s future products exciting.

“I’m looking forward to working with LB Bowls and supporting the new clothing range,” said Coupe. “Wearing the right sort of clothing to feel comfortable in makes a big difference to performance. And having some input into new products is very exciting.”

Environmental Fund save Bowling Club

The playing surface of a local, community bowls facility in Stafford has been greatly enhanced thanks to a significant investment by the Staffordshire Environmental Fund and the local council. A major grant from the environmental organisation, totalling £14,300, enabled Stafford Bowling Club to install a much-needed automated watering system that draws from a

sustainable water source, an abstraction borehole. The cost of the scheme, approximately £18,500, could not have been funded without further generous contributions from Staffordshire County Council, of whom four local councillors - Ray Barron, Mark Heenan, Mark Winnington and Len Bloomer - donated £2,100 from their Local Community Fund. With additional top-up funds donated by club members, the club was able to meet the costs and

thereby fulfil a long-held ambition of installing a fully automated bowling green watering system.

The project incorporated the construction of a borehole to extract water from the aquifer within the environs of Stafford Bowling Club. This provides the club with a long-term

environmentally acceptable solution for the provision of free water at source for the watering of the green. Watering is carried out mainly at night during the bowling season from April to September, and is

automatically controlled by a weather station ensuring that watering only takes place when absolutely necessary.

Installation of the system by the two main contractors - Wyatt Bros (Water Services) Ltd and Osprey Water Management Ltd - commenced in late 2010 and was completed in just ten days.

The official opening was attended by the four councillors and managing director of the Staffordshire Environmental Fund, John Dutton, who expressed his delight at having been able to invest in the local area. “We are delighted to have been able to support Stafford Bowling Club in this environmentally friendly community initiative,” said Dutton.
