Penarth’s WBT ace defeats defending champion Tomlinson to win national outdoor title
enarth's Jason Greenslade is the new Welsh Outdoor Singles champion after he defeated last year's trophy-winner Ross Tomlinson of Glyncorrwg in a high-quality final at Llandrindod Wells.
Greenslade opened with a 21-16 win against Gorseinon's Mark Watkins before defeating Skewen’s Ian Mellor 21-14 in the quarter-finals.
Though the semi-finals were played in fading light, Greenslade’s title hopes were lit up in the dusk as he held for a 21-16 win against
Haverfordwest's Craig Jones, before repeating that scoreline to defeat Tomlinson in the final. Elsewhere, Pontrhydyfen’s Jeffrey Wilkins teamed-up with Ben Thomas to get his hands on the Open Pairs trophy again after a gap of almost a quarter-century. For Wilkins, 24 years had elapsed since he clinched the 1987 title with father David. The Pontrhydyfen duo eased through their first round but were made to sweat in a tough quarter-final against Ely Valley’s Chris Ashman and Phil Robins. Wilkins and Thomas then ended hopes of an all Parc y Dre final by defeating David Pike and Phil Richardson by three shots in the semis, setting up a title contest against another Parc y Dre pairing, Matthew Partridge and Neil Rees who they defeated 26-10 in the final. For Ashman and Robins, meantime, there was further disappointment in store in the Open Triples event. They teamed- up with clubmate Michael Quinn to lose out by the narrowest of margins against Barry Athletic’s Kristian Harris, Glyn Thomas and Robert Horgan in a low-scoring affair that went right to the wire. Presteigne brothers Stuart, Brian, David and Robert Weale defended their Welsh Open Fours title with a 19-11 win against Beaufort in the final.
Earlier in the competition the
Weales won by double-figure margins against Ammanford Park and Glyncorrwg before just edging an outstanding semi-final

against RTB Ebbw Vale. This was a record seventh Welsh Fours title for the Weale brothers. Bridgend’s Paul Taylor finally got his hands on the Welsh Under-25 Singles title after defeating Ystrad Mynach youngster Liam Bouse 21-13 in the final.
There was some joy for Bouse in the Under-18 Singles event when he picked up the title after a 21-11 win against Ogmore Vale’s Jarrad Jones, whilst Tyrfran’s Rod Hugh won the Over-60s Singles title 20 years after he lifted the Welsh Open Singles title, beating Pendine’s Mal Evans 21-16 in a good quality final. Abergavenny’s Ray Poynter and John Beaton won the Senior Pairs title by beating Caerphilly’s Tony Attwood and Keith Crook in a high-scoring final, with Cam Gears quartet Spencer Owens, John James, Gareth Evans and Roy Carter taking home the Senior Fours spoils.
