Fox wins IIBA Singles

Oriel’s Jim Fox was triumphant in the IIBA’s ‘Champion of Champions’ Singles at Ballymoney.

Fox defeated his zone colleague, Michael Hand, 7-5 in a gripping final, matching the achievement of his Oriel team-mate Kevin Conroy back in 2002.

The victory guarantees Fox a place in the Short Mat World Bowls, which are scheduled for the Provincial Towns Club in March. However, it also poses dilemma for Fox because he was a member of the Oriel rink that won the ‘Champion of Champions’ Fours title last season, which also carries a ticket to world bowls.

Boyd enjoys Fours success on return

Though it was only his third outdoor game of the season, John Boyd still walked off with the NIBA Fours title at Carrickfergus.

Joined by Balmoral colleagues Michael Bickerstaff, Davy Ashwood and Clifford Craig, Boyd played a significant role in bringing the trophy back to Belvoir Drive.

A tie-break end was required in a tense final against James Burns’ Curran rink. And, it was Boyd who produced the telling delivery, taking

out an opponent’s bowl to pick up three shots which proved decisive. “John hasn’t played outdoor bowls since Belmont last won the IBA Senior Cup back in 2007 - the last year of their great five-in-a-row achievement,” said Balmoral skip Craig.

“He joined us this season, but has featured in only one league game, against Banbridge.

“It was was certainly a fairytale return for John.”

Ross back in green at Fellowship Trophy

Even though he defected to Scotland last year, Jonathan Ross pulled on a green shirt once again to help Ireland retain the Home Nations Fellowship Trophy in Cardiff.

Ross, now a regular in both the Scottish indoor and outdoor international teams, was a pivotal part of a 12-man Irish squad that was skipped by John Nicholl and included the talents of Nigel Robinson, Rod Coleman, Jimmy

Sarah Jane Coleman

Ballymena’s Sarah Jane Coleman has been crowned as the new Provincial Bowling Association Women’s singles champion.

The 26-year-old turned in an impressive showing against club colleague Barbara Cameron, storming to a 21-17 victory in the final at Coleraine.

Sarah Jane just failed to make it a double when she teamed-up with Erin Smith, Donna McCloy and Jennifer Dowds in the Fours. Coleman’s Ballymena side were beaten 19-15 by Portstewart’s Jennifer Wilson, Peggy McTrusty, Pauline Curry and Bernie O’Neill. Irish international O’Neill also walked off with the Pairs crown, joined by Margaret Campbell. The Portstewart duo defeated Dowds and McCloy 26-14 in the decider.

“Even though he won the Singles at the weekend, he will be permitted to play in only one discipline at world bowls. I assume that Jim will opt to play in the Singles, which means that a substitute must be found for him in the rink.”

Dunluce seal historic

IBA Senior Cup victory Dunluce overcame St James’ Gate to lift the IBA Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Dunluce grabbed the initiative right from the off and led throughout an enthralling contest, defying the odds to send their opponents packing in a thrilling final at Belmont, winning by seven shots.

They became the first Provincial winners since 1982.

Hagan wins Singles

event at St Joseph’s Neville Hagan emerged triumphant in St Joseph’s Bowls Club’s annual Singles tournament at Omagh. Hagan, representing Mayne, defeated Jal Richardson of St Mark’s Portadown in a hotly-contested final. “The tournament was again an outstanding success, with entries received from seven counties,” said organiser Danny McLaughlin. “There was some outstanding bowling over the ten days.”
