WIBC U25 Championships

Glory for Jones and Stanton R

oss-on-Wye bowler Shaun Jones claimed the biggest prize of his burgeoning bowls career to date by bagging the WIBC Gents’ Under-25 Singles Championship at Llanelli Indoor Bowls Club.

The Herefordshire rising star defeated Irish bowler Darren Atkinson to take the title and so follow in the footsteps of the likes of World Bowls Tour stars Darren Burnett and Stewart Anderson who have previously lifted the trophy.

He did it the hard way, too. After qualifying for the semi-finals, where he saw off Welshman Ross Owen 9-4, 9-7, Jones came up against Atkinson in the final. The young Englishman took the opening set 9-4, just as he did in the semi, but lost his way in the second, going down 10-2.

That left the destiny of the title riding on a tie-breaker, and with momentum seemingly on his opponent’s side. However, Jones regained his composure impressively and took the two extra ends that he required to claim the trophy. Interestingly, his victory made him the first English winner of the title since Jamie Chestney prevailed in 2006, and only the third overall.

There was yet more success for England to savour in the Ladies’ Under-25 Singles Championship, with Amy Stanton mounting a successful defence of the title she won 12 months previously.

Stanton, 22, beat her international team-mate and good friend Rebecca Field 7-6, 8-4 in the final to become the first player ever to successfully defend the title.

The former University of

Worcester sports studies student qualified for the event after finishing first whilst representing England in the Under-25s British Bowls Championships in Perth earlier in the year.

As well as becoming the first player to defend the title, Stanton also became just the second bowler to claim the trophy twice, following in the footsteps of Welsh bowler Kerry

Packwood, who posted wins in 2009 and 2010. Stanton’s victory was also the sixth overall by an English bowler in the competition. However, the ‘Three Lions’ hopes of making it a clean sweep of victories were dashed in the Mixed Pairs competition. Scotland’s Calum Logan and Sophie Rabey of Guernsey joined forces to beat Rabey’s clubmate Todd Priaulx and the aforementioned English bowler Field in the final.

Logan and Rabey lost the first set 8-5 but regained their composure to win the second 9-3 and set-up a tie-break decider for the title, which they just got the better of, 2-1. Curiously, they became the second Scotland-Guernsey combination in just four years to take the title.
