East Lothian IBC celebrates 25 years Steven Allan
Some of Scotland’s finest bowlers turned out to help East Lothian Indoor Bowls Club celebrate its silver anniversary recently. Reigning World Bowls Tour No.1 Paul Foster and Alex Marshall, who between them have won the World Indoor Singles Championship a whopping eight times, were in attendance, as was the legendary Willie Wood and other Scottish internationals in the shape of David Peacock, Julie Forrest and Graham Robertson. A high-quality singles competition was
held to help celebrate the club’s 25 years - it opened in 1986 - with Peacock defeating Foster 21-18 in the final. Foster had looked odds-on to claim the title, after opening up a 6-0 lead early on. However, Peacock hit back to score 11 unanswered shots. Foster closed the deficit to 11-8 but, again, Peacock hit top gear to reach 18-10. Foster once more fought his way back into the match to trail 20-18. Peacock, though, was not to be denied and scored the vital shot required on the final end.
Delegates pleased with Kelvingrove
Members from the Lawn Bowls International Federation have visited Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre and finished the visit by expressing their delight at the preparation that has already gone into the West End venue that will host the lawn bowls competition for the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Kerry Clark, World Bowls technical delegate for Glasgow 2014 and World Bowls chief executive Gary Smith have been in Glasgow to meet the Organising Committee and assess the greens at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre. Lawn bowls will provide entertainment and excitement during the Games in just under three years time and the final stages of preparation this summer has seen the laying of the turf onto the newly-constructed greens, which will be open to the public next summer.
The venue’s West End location will be one of the highlights of Glasgow 2014, with a magnificent backdrop, immediately adjacent to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and close to the University of Glasgow.
Once complete, the new centre will be one of the finest in Scotland and both delegates expressed their confidence in the venue after the visit.
Clark said: “Advance planning is a crucial element to staging a successful lawn bowls competition at any level. Therefore, it’s incredibly important for us to see the progress at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre in regards to the organising committee and its planning for the Commonwealth Games. “The organisers at Glasgow 2014 have made a positive start in their preparations to ensure we have a quality playing surface to match this outstanding picturesque venue
in just under three years time and I have every confidence this will continue right up until the Games.”
Smith added: “It has been fantastic to see first-hand the level of preparation and work that’s gone into the greens already, which is a credit to the organising committee and its Games partners.
“Bowls is a truly international sport and
World Bowls is based here in Scotland. With this in mind, seeing how advanced Glasgow 2014 is in their planning and preparation, we are confident Glasgow 2014 will stage the best lawn bowls competition the Commonwealth has ever seen.” Alan McMillan, Bowls Scotland chief executive said: “Glasgow 2014 has made an excellent start to the development of Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre and we look forward to seeing the venue come to fruition in three years time.”
