Wheelchair BowlsRound-up IN BRIEF

All the latest from the wheelchair bowls scene, by Ian Blackmore

There is good news to report regarding Birmingham’s Vera Moore, who, having been in poor health for a few months, has now moved into a specialist complex of flats with family nearby.

After receiving generous sponsorship from an anonymous donor, the BWBA will be able to hold a prestigious outdoor Pairs competition in the Summer of 2012. The venue for the event, which will take place over the weekend of August 11-12, will be the Isle of Wedmore BC in Somerset.

Wheelies secure win on their first-ever outing to Foxhill IBC

Wheelchair bowlers have been used to playing in Aylesbury since the formation of the BWBA in the early 1980s. Most of you will know that they have been based at Stoke Mandeville IBC (SMIBC). However, for the first time, the BWBA ventured across town to play a match against the other Aylesbury club: Foxhill IBC.

The match had been planned for some time but had a certain added poignancy with the threat of closure hanging over SMIBC. Foxhill’s players came from the counties of Bucks and Herts. The BWBA team travelled from much further afield: Lincolnshire, North Wales, Sussex, Kent, Avon, Durham, Oxon, Essex, Lancashire, as well as Bucks. This was one of the most widely-spread team of wheelies ever to

We need your info!

A reminder of an earlier request to any bowls club who has not yet sent in a response for participation in the BWBA’s ‘Accessibility Survey’. There are lots of clubs who have replied – thank you to them all, but there is always room for more. All we need to know are the answers to three simple questions. Individuals or clubs can send an email to ianblackmore@bwba.org.uk or phone 07932 791519 with your responses to the following questions:

Q1 What wheelchair facilities do you have at your club? Ramps? Toilets? Parking? Etc.

Q2 How many bowls wheelchairs do you have? Q3 How many bowlers at your club bowl from a wheelchair?

The information provided helps the BWBA in answering some of the queries we get about access. There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers, just tell us what the wheelchair facilities are like at your club and any other information about access that you might want to pass on; thank you

represent the BWBA. The players’ journeys were to prove worth it. The BWBA edged a narrow win by three shots, 66-63.

New BWBA member Ben Hopkin (Fishguard & Goodwick BC) has enjoyed something that not all bowlers do, namely, a maximum count of eight whilst playing in a rink for his club. Ben shared the joy with club team- mates John Davies, Bernard Williams and Jenny Harris.

There is sad news to report following the deaths of two wheelchair bowlers. Firstly, Brian Hunter, who had been ill for some time. He was one of the earliest members of the BWBA and had bowled at Stoke Mandeville before the BWBA formally existed. Secondly, Northern Ireland’s Henry ‘Harry’ Haydock died very suddenly and unexpectedly. Harry, as he was commonly known in wheelchair bowls, had been a stalwart of Northern Ireland wheelchair bowls teams over many years. Both Brian and Harry will be missed by their bowling friends.

Long-time BWBA supporter, Gerry Gridley, a former president of Somerset CBA has been unwell after a stroke. The good news is that Gerry is now taking it easy and recuperating.

Percy Powell, definitely now a veteran of wheelchair bowls, is also recuperating after a stint in hospital. This was a planned trip and, whilst all went well, Percy will be on kidney dialysis from now on. All his friends - and there are many - wish him well.
