Bowls Scotland has appointed former world champion David Gourlay as its new head coach.

Gourlay, the current WBT No.8, will be charged with leading the national squad to a successful Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and beyond. Inspired to take up the game by his Commonwealth Games gold medallist parents at the age of 11, the Glasgow-based player has since accumulated ten World Bowls Tour titles including the World Indoor Singles title in 2006.

Following a lengthy spell in Australia, where Gourlay was involved in both playing and coaching in the outdoor and indoor game, he returned to Scotland where he has enjoyed success both on and off the greens, using his extensive knowledge of the sport to set-up a thriving bowls retail outlet, now the largest in Scotland.

Club vice-president Eric Scott commented:

“We opted for the visiting clubs on our fixture list to give us a cash gift rather than a token, for example, and with our own club contribution, we were delighted to present this cheque to the charity of our choice, CHAS.” Members of Arbroath BC are pictured, right.

played at the very highest level of the game, competing successfully against the very best players in the world.

“During a competitive and coaching career which has taken him around the globe, David has witnessed first-hand world class performance models and he will now have the opportunity to develop our elite plan and enable his fellow Scots to continue the success that Scotland and he himself has enjoyed for many years. Gourlay, 45, added: “I am very excited about my role with the new organisation and the opportunity to create a blueprint for future training initiatives and an elite strategy to further develop the game.

“Scotland has a wealth of talent in lawn bowls and, with my experience of playing at the top of the game and understanding what it requires for players to achieve world champion titles, I am looking forward to developing and delivering coaching and competition programmes to build upon the many successes that both myself and my fellow players have achieved to take the sport to a new level.”
