DETAILS [snapshot] An introduction to the work of Canadian lighting design practice Suzanne Powadiuk Design. THE DELEGATION OF THE ISMAILI

IMAMAT CLIENT: THE AGA KHAN ARCHITECTS: MAKI AND ASSOCIATES, MORI- YAMA & TESHIMA ARCHITECTS The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, was designed by Maki and Associates and Moriyama & Teshima Architects. It is a formal and symbolically representative building for the Aga Khan and the non-denominational, philanthropic and developmental agencies, which constitute the Aga Khan Development Network. The garden court’s geometric layout recalls the char-bagh, or traditional Persian-Islamic walled garden, a representation of paradise. Delicate light patterns illuminate the path through the garden to the main atrium space. This atrium is shrouded in glass fibre scrims revealing or concealing the structure of the glass dome above it depending upon the light conditions. During the day natural light fills the atrium and obscures the structure, while at night the scrims become more prominent.

HOLT RENFREW CALGARY LUXURY FLAGSHIP CLIENT: HOLT RENFREW ARCHITECTS: JANSON GOLDSTEIN For 170 years, Holt Renfrew has been renowned for offering its customers the highest standard of excellence in customer service and merchandise in its nine retail stores across Canada. Their luxury brands include Gucci, Prada, Jil Sander, Fendi, Jimmy Choo, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton to name a few. The 3 storey, 151,000 square foot renovation and expansion of the Holt Renfrew Calgary Luxury Flagship store included an additional 60,000 square feet of retail space. A distinguishing elegant urban presence was critical for the Holt Renfrew brand. The architects, Janson Goldstein LLP from New York, created a corner tower treatment that met the challenge. Custom folded metal plates affixed to a hidden armature create a textural tower of light. Especially appealing to the client was the option of changing the quiet white light to their striking signature magenta colour when highlighting special store events.
