176 TECHNOLOGY / RED DOT AWARDS 2012 ON THE DOT

Each year, the Red Dot Institute recognises products that demonstrate excellence in design quality. Here are just a handful that made the grade in 2012

a Pleg • LZF

Pleg is a wall lamp created from a folded Polywood sheet. The light is diffused through the open sides while also passing through the veneered frontage to give the grain a warm glow. This piece by Spanish design studio Yonoh can be fitted in either a horizontal or verticle position. www.lzf-lamps.com

b VFL540 LED • We-ef

The VFL540 LED street and area lighting luminaire has already been proven by an installation in the city of Bielefeld where 5,889 existing luminaires were replaced with the post mounted luminaires. This switch to LED allowed the city to reduce public lighting power consumption by 1.8 million kWh per year. A smaller VFL530 LED and larger VFL560 LED are also available. www.weef.de

c 28d • Bocci

The 28d fixture is a distorted spherical shape with a composed collection of inner shapes, one of which is made of opaque milk glass and houses a low voltage (12V, 20W) xenon light source. Designed to sit on a horizontal surface (a desk, table, shelf, or even the floor), it consists of a single illumi- nated piece wired to a flexible grey crochet memory cable. The cable is intended to be coiled into a sculptural pattern to provide a cushioned surface on which the glass sits. www.bocci.ca

Metronome • Delta Light Delta Light has worked in collaboration with fashion designer Tim Van Steenbergen to re- work their Husk fitting to become a totally new creation. The pendant comes in three versions: Metronome XXL (tailor-made) and two smaller variations (Metronome with and without the top part of the Husk model). www.deltalight.com

d e Beehive • Foscarini

Launched successfully last year in a table lamp version, Behive, created for Foscarini by designer Werner Aisslinger, is now also available in a suspension lamp version, retaining a warm and soft luminosity with

the addition of a direct down-light. In the suspension version, Behive retains all its original character: a poetic and beguiling lamp - both when it is on and off - featur- ing a pure, iconic and technically perfect shape. A particular light focus, which lights up any setting. www.foscarini.com

f Archetype • Luceplan

The Archetype lamp’s name was chosen to indicate its iconic, archetypal silhouette, a contemporary reinterpretation of the inci- sive elegance typical of Danish Modern. It is equipped with an outer body in aluminium and a diffuser in transparent polycarbon- ate. Inside, it contains an LED light source for warm light, and an E27 attachment that makes it possible to directly insert the fixture in an existing socket, just like an ordinary light bulb. www.luceplan.com

g base • IP44.de

base has a frameless housing with black shadowed glass that is lowered flush into the ground. It has an elliptic lens with a half angle of 22.5°/7.5° and highly efficient IvyLight-technology for maximum light qual- ity. The wall-washer lens gives a uniform light effect. It can be adjusted in fine angles of 10° for optimum, homogeneous alignment of the light effect on the wall surface. base IvyLight is available in two versions: the single-lamp base #1 IvyLight and double-lamp base #2 IvyLight. www.ip44.de

h Dot-Spot • Sigma

The slender, solid wood body of Sigma (designed by Markus Bischof) is suspended in space by a minimalist, current-carry- ing, two-cable system that removes the need for the usual electric leads. A visually unobtrusive steel wire spring forces the two cables into shape. Touch dimmer-controlled LEDs run between the two side lengths of the body, to add sculpted elegance to the piece. The canopy housing is held by hidden magnets, which makes the design appear totally integrated. www.dot-spot.de
